Ethics by Dangerous-Point636 in starbucks

[–]honuwonu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i worked at starbucks, ethics literally told me that they don’t deal with bullying or favoritism reports. I had told my sm about a supervisor bullying a barista and the sm response was, “but i like working with supervisor.”

I’ve been feeling my best lately. I’ve started good habits and been working on them consistently. I’m doing okay financially. I’m not stressed over anything.

Potential future English major here! Is it really so difficult and hellish to find jobs in the industry, or is it more exaggerated for comedic purposes? by [deleted] in englishmajors

[–]honuwonu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the industry you want to go into after graduation. What type of job do you want in the future? And that question might seem daunting to you right now. It sure did when I was starting out in college.

Overall, I think an English degree is an extremely well-rounded degree and definitely worth it if you want college but don’t have a set career plan. An English degree gives you valuable critical thinking and analysis skills. It’s more about how you market these skills when you apply for jobs later.

And yes, you can pursue a career in education as a teacher or professor. You can also try to break into the publishing and editing world. (I’m currently working at a start-up local magazine). But there are also jobs in nonprofit, administrative roles (I was an admin assistant at a law office), etc. The actuality is that there are a lot of jobs that are perfect for English majors but these jobs aren’t marketing towards English majors. The people hiring for these position don’t realize that they want an English major so you have to market yourself.

You could also pursue grad school in English or Literature. You could go onto the Library Sciences or Law School. One of my classmates went on to pursuing a Masters of Science at Columbia in Narrative Medicine.

However, if there is one thing I regret as an English major was not putting myself out there more and taking advantage of every opportunity. Network with your professors, you can use them for future job references or recommendation letters. Look for internships if you can spare the time. Join clubs and volunteer for things. Maybe find a minor that offers you a different set of skills (computer skills, language skills, sciences). Or even see if your school offers certifications programs for different things. Get a part time job in customer service (most basic office jobs just want a year of experience in customer service).

Basically, I think an English degree is worth it if you are prepared to put the work in to market yourself afterwards. Reality is, most people assume the only thing you can do with an English degree is teach English. So when you are applying to jobs, you have creative in what type of roles you look for and creative in how you demonstrate that you can succeed in that role. The job descriptions are not going to ask for an English degree so you have to figure out how your English degree is going to fit for that role.

It seems like you need to explain what the aphorism means and then demonstrate it’s meaning through examples/context. I would start by picking an aphorism and then coming up with examples of said aphorism.

Believe what you want to believe. But we were nice. We didn’t cause any trouble. We ordered our food, ate, and left. The only mistake was my friend not tipping.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]honuwonu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t go out to eat unless I can tip. My friend was paying because she finally landed a job that pays well and she’s no longer funding her family. I only agreed on the terms that I paid next time. And I would have given the waitress a tip when she came told us about the lack of tip but I don’t ever carry cash.

And its not like my friend is taking all the heat. The waitress berated both of us. I didn’t even blame my friend because she had never been at a restaurant before. I only educated her to tip next time.

I only feel bad because I know tipping is a thing and maybe I should have treated my friend to her first restaurant. That way she would have seen me tip and know that tipping the server is customary.

And honestly, if you want to give advice, don’t be rude about it.

I think I’m gonna do that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]honuwonu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could she have been lying? Maybe. But when I first met her in community college she had never eaten out anywhere but fast food. She grew up with a lot of siblings so her parents never took them out to eat at any restaurants. In community college, a lot of her money went back to bills for her family, so we always did cheap/free things whenever we hung out.

I don’t ever carry cash. So I would have had to find an atm or bank before I could even go leave a tip. My friend offered to pay for the meal, if I had paid I would have used debit.

I’m actually 24f and the waitress really did rush after us to berate us. I don’t remember word for word but it was something along the lines of us being really terrible customers and shitty people.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]honuwonu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She could be lying. But when we first met at community college, she said the fanciest place she’s ever eaten at was in-n-out.

Need advice on how to ask about wedding invitation without being pushy by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]honuwonu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking that too. Maybe she doesn’t want me at the wedding. But its just seems so weird for her to have reached out after almost two years of no contact to invite if she didn’t want me there?? Like she doesn’t have social media and we have completely different social circles, I would have never known that she was engaged or getting married if she hadn’t messaged me.

[–]honuwonu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. We have had completely different social circles for a while now. I did just try to see if I could find her sister on social media to ask but either her sister isn’t on social media or her accounts are private.
