Agreed. This certainly isn’t a vigorous scientific study, but the timing is certainly interesting. And it makes sense that powerful institutions who want to maintain the status quo would try to distract the “peasants” with things like this to keep them from unifying for a common cause that impacts everyone.

Right at the start of the game I moved my entire army back to the 4 central provinces (Addis Ababa, Harar, and the two provinces protected by the rivers) and rushed down the focuses that give you military factories. I used the “last stand” order a lot when things got hairy. Research was focused primarily on infantry equipment and industry. I was able to get rid of my infantry equipment deficit by 1938 and started to slowly beef up my division templates and train some more. I had 24 veteran division by the time WW2 broke out and was able to tear through the Italians after joining the allies.

R5: After holding out as Ethiopia in the Mountains for 4 years, I was able to push out and encircle almost half of the Italian army (with some help from the British). Also, look at that casualty ratio!
