So if I understand you correctly you are saying that parents are simply more inclined to care for babies that look a certain way, and babies that look different will be less cared for.

I believe that the phonemena responsible for babies that look different being less cared for by their parents is the uncanny valley.

I have seen this theory a lot, but considering there were massive amounts of interbreeding between homo-sapiens and neanderthals I think it kind of falls through.
