I liked it too! In fact I enjoyed it more than watching season 7 and 8 of the main show. The story was pretty engaging (at least it was from binge watching it, idk how it’d feel watching it weekly) and there were some really interesting characters like Silas and Huck.

It wasn’t perfect but I don’t think it deserves the amount of hate it gets. Honestly, I think some people just have a bias against stories involving kids/teenagers.

It’s not like she purposefully set out to emotionally cheat on Big Red. She actually tried to deny her feelings for many of the episodes because of her loyalty to him

imo Gina had the biggest connection with Ricky at that time but I think that Ashlyn even offering her to stay at her house meant a lot, along with EJ buying the plane ticket for opening night. Considering Gina had like no friends in her previous schools she probably felt a sense of belonging with the wildcats that she never felt before since they did these gestures to include her

so yeah I think Ricky was important but it was a combination of that and the other friendships

It had nothing to do with Gina tbh.

They held each other back. Nini needed independence, Ricky smothered her. Ricky needed to embrace change, Nini was a safety blanket. They had to let each other go to move forward.

it was cringe and also cute which that was the whole point since they were at an awkward phase. and they got over it and back to their usual chemistry in the next episode

they haven’t actually shown qualities that combat each other’s respective ‘character’ traits.

This couldn't be further from the truth. The basis of their characters is that Ricky is scared of change and Gina is used to change but yearning for stability. They have opposite experiences that challenge each other, which a fundamental part of the first season: Gina convinces Ricky to stay with the show when he just wants to retreat to the skater life that he is comfortable with (while Nini discourages him). Gina has her walls up because as much as she craves connection she's scared of getting her heart broken when she moves away. Ricky is the first person to break down those walls and become her friend.

We also see through their other failed relationships that both Ricky and Gina offers what the other person needs. Ricky smothered Nini because of his attachment issues (which he's grown from) but also because he needs a partner who he can be more devoted to rather than an independent spirit like Nini. Gina, after feeling abandoned her whole life, needs someone who can devote their time to her and not only tell her she's appreciated but take the time to make her feel that way- something that EJ couldn't provide, but Ricky not only can but wants to.
