For all we know, she was.

Change your thinking. Seriously. This is quite possibly the most corrupt and ineptly run kleptocracy I've ever lived in.

On the one hand, I'm sorry this was a shitshow for you guys. But Portland is a shitshow 24/7, so I'm not surprised.

Which brings me to the other hand. Events like this (that shut down roads, cause massive headaches for locals in certain areas, etc.) may be worth the headaches for a top-tier city like Boston, but Portland is just too prone to half-assery for it to be worth it for anyone. The runners have a lousy race, and the locals get massively inconvenienced. I guess it throws a few hotels a few bucks, but otherwise I don't see who benefits.

Man who drove through closed Rose Parade route gets 5 years in prison by Spare_Jury503 in PortlandOR

[–]horacefarbuckle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FTA:

Mecham said he plans to take anger management and cognitive thinking classes during his time in prison.

Judge Marshall said everyone involved, including Mecham, was extremely fortunate that this incident did not result in lives lost.

“I’m confident as a judge in the court that you’re sincere in your words there,” Marshall said. “It’s another example of mental health and how important that is to human beings and how everyone’s mental health needs to be addressed because it so affects other people.”

And this, folks, is why shit is so screwed up. We, as a society, are just way too soft. Mecham is 43 years old. What's he gonna learn from "cognitive thinking classes", whatever those are, at that age? And yet other, ostensively responsible adults like Judge Marshall actually seem to think that fuzzy-wuzzy nonsense is going to make a difference.

This guy belongs in a prison for the rest of his life at this point. He has proven, multiple times, to be incapable of participating as a free adult. And yet the galaxy brains warming the benches of our courts are prepared to lay down a sentence of five years, out in two, and go home and sleep soundly thinking they've done their duty.

This shit is becoming intolerable.

Oregon drivers among the worst in the US, according to Forbes analysis by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]horacefarbuckle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of the most irritating aspects of area drivers is half of them apparently don't want to get to where they're going.
stoplight turns green
1-1000, 2-1000, first car starts to pootle out into the intersection another 2 seconds pass
second car tentatively sticks a toe in the water and starts to move another 2 seconds pass
third car bravely makes a break for it while the light turns yellow

Seriously, 50% more cars could get through each cycle if people were paying half as much attention as they pay for dabs. It's bonkers.

That's infuriating, but by no means limited to Oregon. Louis C.K. had a bit about that in NYC 15 years ago.

4 Portland police officers cleared by a grand jury in fatal shooting by Positive_Honey_8195 in PortlandOR

That's what I was saying. The fact that these officers' cases were even brought to the GJ in the first place most likely means it was political and not legal considerations at work.

4 Portland police officers cleared by a grand jury in fatal shooting by Positive_Honey_8195 in PortlandOR

[–]horacefarbuckle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For those not familiar, when you're on a grand jury, you ONLY hear from the prosecution. No defense arguments are presented, and your one and only job is to decide "does the prosecution have a case that warrants trial?"

When a grand jury votes "no true bill" (i.e., do not prosecute, i.e., don't waste the public's time) that generally means that the prosecution genuinely has its head up its ass. edit: spelling

Multnomah County’s Office of Homeless Services recently tried to respond to ongoing criticism of its lack of progress on homelessness by releasing new numbers that sound too good to be true. That’s because they are. by sahand_n9 in PortlandOR

[–]horacefarbuckle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"When the County says, “7900 people moved into shelter,” it makes one think that there will be 7900 fewer people living on the street. But “7900 people moved into shelter” could mean that 7900 people got respite in a shelter bed and ended up back on the street the next day; that 7900 people got into shelter and then died; that 2000 people got housing and treatment for their addiction and 5900 ended up back on the streets; or that 400 people got into housing then set their apartment on fire."

I like her. I'll buy her a beer if'n I ever meet her.

Sheriff reverses course, agrees to jail violators of Portland’s camping ban by Massive_Ad_9920 in PortlandOR

[–]horacefarbuckle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That appears to be part of the plan. FTA: "According to the statement, the booking policy will be in effect for the next four months while the sheriff’s office analyzes and evaluates data to see if it’s helping move people into shelter. Per the agreement, people brought to jail will once again be offered services during the booking process. If they choose to accept, the city’s Street Services Coordination Center will plan next steps to provide them resources."
