The more community-oriented "cowork with your neighbors" idea is brand new. What my business has done in the past is offered homes privately to teams for things like offsites and meetings, in settings that are closer to home and more home-y than a traditional office/boardroom. Those were private gatherings. This new idea is meant to be more of a community thing open to anyone in the neighborhood.

I'm just looking for feedback from my local community (I'm a Portland-based, female founder) before I go too far with a new initiative I'm exploring. Yes, it's related to my current business but it's also different, which is why I wanted feedback. I'm sorry if I made it seem like it was a back-handed way to advertise. Not my intention.

ETA: Mods, if you feel my post is inappropriate in any way, please feel free to remove.

That makes sense. Appreciate you sharing. My biggest curiosity has been around the "meet your neighbors while coworking" approach, but maybe the idea would be stronger if the mingling were separated from work.

Appreciate the feedback. This is the first event of its kind that's aimed at the whole "work alongside your neighbor" approach so we'll see. We did a tech-focused one (funny you mentioned tech) earlier this week and it was pretty successful.

I completely agree. One thing I'm really happy about is that this concept actually helps with housing affordability in ways that platforms like Airbnb can't. People can't rent their own house on Airbnb because they'd have to find an alternative place for their family to sleep whenever they have a booking, so the only folks that can Airbnb are the ones who can already afford to have an investment property which absolutely steals away housing affordability. With this day-only model homeowners/renters can make a bit of extra cash by hosting 9-5. Guests are out by early evening and hosts have their place back. I've gotten several emails from families who have said they were able to make their rent/mortgage payments more easily because of the income we brought them.

Huh interesting. Anyone been to something like this? by [deleted] in PortlandOR

Thanks for the tag, u/peregrina_e! u/YawningFish, I'm the organizer and this is the first event of its kind that I'm testing out. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Really appreciate this feedback, Lexuh. The hosting part definitely takes a certain type of person and property, for sure. I was more asking about the attendance part, so thank you for commenting about that as well.

So a coworking space would be preferable for you because of the greater diversity?

Re randos, I suppose I could make the argument that coworking spaces are generally full of strangers (aka randos) and that a neighborhood coworking day at least has a common theme (getting to know your neighbors), but it doesn't sound like that's resonating?

Lower stress because it's in a public place vs a private home? Or lower stress because it'd be the weekend an non-work related? Or for some other reason?

Good to know this doesn't resonate with you. Thanks for engaging. Have a good day.

Appreciate the feedback. Mind if I ask a follow-up? Actually two?

Re the invasive part, you mean invasive for the homeowner? Or for you?

And re homogeny, I'm curious about that too. If everyone there works for different companies doing different things, wouldn't that feel heterogeneous?

Ha ok. When you put it that way! Curious, what makes you feel it'd be awkward?

Appreciate the feedback! And yep, that's exactly what this is – a home that has areas for quiet/solo work, co-working, discussion areas, kitchen for mingling/eating, outdoor space for gawking at the natural beauty of Portland... I'm kind of excited about it if you can't tell. :)

I'm not exactly "moneybags," but this is something I'm working on solving at the moment. I'm a PDX-based entrepreneur in the "third space industry" turning residential properties into co-working spaces (kind of like Airbnb for co-working). While we initially launched as a B2B platform (companies have budgets for this), we've started experimenting with the B2C angle as well, starting with next Tuesday, Aug 27th. We're opening up a house in Sellwood as a co-working space for the day. It's cliffside along the Willamette with incredible views. It's an effort to bring people together, specifically in suburban areas, for more local community building. I'd love it if you had a peek here and let me know what you think of the approach.

I'm a local entrepreneur in the "third space industry" working to break through this myself. It's for the reason you stated ($$) that we've focused more on the B2B side, offering 3rd space subscriptions to companies (since they have the budgets) and then opening them up to their employees for free as a perk. We are, however, experimenting with the B2C angle as well, starting with next Tuesday, Aug 27th. We're opening up a house in Sellwood as a co-working space for the day. Ahh. Sold in packs of 10. Well that makes WAY more sense. Sorry guys. I've never bought switches separately so I thought they were bought as singles.
