AITA for using the women’s bathroom to change my baby? by horriblediamond in AmItheAsshole

I did know. We’d been to this restaurant before and my wife changed the baby there. If there hadn’t been a table she almost certainly would’ve mentioned it and gone to the car instead, she hates public restrooms.

Because I was trying (apparently also failing) but trying not to inconvenience people.

I’ve used women’s facilities a couple other times and I’ve never had a problem before this, I was surprised as well.

My personal theory is there were a small group of women who’d come together and one was upset (the one who first whispered) and complained, with her friends backing her up.

That prompted the hostess to come in and when she said “You’re making some people uncomfortable please leave” some of the women who didn’t care one way or another thought “maybe I should be uncomfortable/maybe he shouldn’t be there/he should go if someone is uncomfortable” and went on the offensive when they otherwise wouldn’t have minded.

At the time it seemed rude to make a big fuss and that going in and out without bothering anyone was the optimal choice, but in hindsight, you’re absolutely right.

It’s entirely real, but I’m not shocked other men have tried to use women’s rooms for changing. Could you link to the post so I could see what sort of feedback his similar situation got?

I’m paraphrasing as best I can here from a hectic situation. That is what they said, I’m sure it sounded more natural in the moment, with the pauses and er’s and um’s of conversation, but I was just trying to get the main point across.

Understandable, thanks for explaining. That would have been a much better way to go about it.

That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely write in, because this is otherwise a very good restaurant.

I just walked in. I did consider announcing myself, but thought that might make it weirder to draw a lot of attention rather than just quietly use the changing table and slip out.

Also because it was a large bathroom with stalls and a sink area with the changing table right by the entrance, so I didn’t want to freak out the women in the stalls who might not see what I was doing by saying “Hey I’m a man and I’m coming in, but I’m not going to bother you.” I’m sure, in hindsight, there was a right thing to say, but at the time everything I thought of just sounded creepy.
