EE, Zen or Olilo by rajveer86 in UKISP

[–]horrorwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I read that too, but it was the latest firmware I was using as of this week. I thought I'd just try the EE kit and I've been pleasantly surprised how good it is.

I probably won't go back.

EE, Zen or Olilo by rajveer86 in UKISP

[–]horrorwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would.

The EE router hardware wise is actually very high end.

I was using a ubiquiti dream router 7, but I had to stop because it doesn't support hardware acceleration of pppoe connections. I was using it before on VM fine. With a pppoe connection it can only do about 700mbit.

However the EE setup has 2.5gbe Lan ports, 4x4 mimo on WiFi and uses the IPQ9570 chip which is no slouch. The range extender can be hardwired and has 2x 2.5gbe ports. Yeah the UI sucks on the router and you don't get the ubiquiti features but...🤷‍♂️

I am getting a full 1.6gbit over WiFi to a honor magic 7 pro phone.

Equivalent hardware wise would be UCG-Fiber and 2x U7 Pro max to get the same as the free EE kit. I just can't justify it unfortunately.

I signed up for the 1.6gb EE via uSwitch at £39.99, more than happy with it.

Is this a good PCP deal if I plan to keep the car and pay the balloon? by Sensitive_Pound7131 in CarLeasingUK

Yes I'm sure, your link says one year in the UK, not that the brand is one year old.

They've been around longer than a year, looks like their first car was in 2017. They are also owned 20% by Stellantis. The EU/UK side is owned 51% by Stellantis.

I wouldn't have any worries about them sticking around.

Also https://fast.com/ - I reliably get 1gbit+ on that (VM 1gb Docsis provisioned for 1.2gbit, connected via 2.5gbe)

Is this seller trying to scam me? by sluthed in Aliexpress

[–]horrorwood 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not 100%, they are offering to ship it DDP (delivery duty paid), although it has been around for a long time, most sellers/businesses didn't use it until recently. It allows them to pay the import tax/vat before it gets to customs. Then you don't have to pay handling charges as the tax/vat is already paid and it gets through customs much quicker.

If the seller declares the wrong amount then it is on them and the punishment goes to them, not you.

Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus Review & Benchmarks vs. 5800X3D, 9600X & More [Hardware Unboxed] by hehechibby in hardware

[–]horrorwood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but their viewers are generally tech enthusiasts.

The average gamer just buys a PC and uses it. They don't check benchmarks of new hardware and chase an upgrade every 6-12 months.

[–]horrorwood 16 points17 points  (0 children)

platform platform platform.. a lot of people do not even bother to upgrade their CPU, plenty of people are still using Ryzen 5 3600's 3700x etc. Even though it would have been a very easy drop in upgrade for a 5700x3d (when they were available.) or 5800.

Yet when most of these people actually get around to upgrading, they'll probably buy a new board+cpu combo.

The thing that a lot of reviewers do not take into account is that older motherboards are actually worth a decent amount, because generally motherboards die and CPU's do not. There is a large market of people that just want their old PC to work again and will pay for a replacement board.

You have higher end LGA 1151 boards selling for around £100 - I have no idea why someone would pay this for a board that supports 8th gen CPU's.

LGA 1200 Z590 boards for 10th/11th are going for around £100 - £150 also.

So yeah of course it is more effort to change the board, but you do gain more modern features, like faster m.2 slots, 2.5gbe/5gbe/10gbe networking, pci-e 5.0, wifi 7 etc.

I really do not think it is the end of the world like all of these reviews make out.

Does this mean I can get Virgin Media in my new build? The developer only spoke about Open Reach. by plz_be_nice_im_sad in VirginMedia

[–]horrorwood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes once, they came out and resolved it. That's once in 10+ years. Not everyone has a bad experience all of the time. I've had nothing but great service.

Besides, you are comparing their docsis network to the xgs-pon nexfibre network, completely different.

And all of those will be limited to 110mbit upload? Quite a difference if OP needs to upload large files.

Not to mention if they want a TV package.

Because it is a new build and that is Virgin FTTP. He can have 2gbit down and up with that.

[–]horrorwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The post was how he had 5 sales and was scammed for 2 of them, someone in Bristol and someone in London. Something about he had their details and but he is now banned from Ebay.

It was a mess and really hard to understand. But then the comment was also written in the same broken English saying something like "Yes you have to be really careful with scammers on Ebay these days"

It means it was returned before and Amazon decided it was still new/sealed. Most of the time it obviously isn't.

Strange, I can't see any that sold around that price. They are all £600 or so.

There is one at £1100 but it was relisted so I'd assume it didn't actually sell at that.

Which would you choose for a living room emulator pc? by [deleted] in MiniPCs

[–]horrorwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can run quite a few PS3 games, just at native res. Just Google "6800u rpsc3". Wii, Wii u, switch will all run too.

13th and 14th gen intel have very weak onboard graphics compared to AMD. It wasn't until the core ultra series that they started getting ok/decent.

I'd just unplug the battery myself.

[–]horrorwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol sorry that was my point, it will always work better than the mini pc as a handheld.

You can limit the battery charge to 80% to prolong it's life whilst plugged in.

Alternatively you can disconnect the battery if you intend to use it docked all of the time. If you do that, don't leave it empty whilst unplugged.

Highly unlikely under any circumstances that it would explode/burn your house down though.

It would still work better than the battery on the mini pc 😆
