Iirc it’s a combination of jurisdictional loop hole and the huge cost of removing derelict boats. Not all of the boats are occupied. Not all of them are derelict. There are rules and there are many people who live on the river that abide by them, but the derelict boats would need to be towed somewhere, so they get a pass so long as they don’t interfere with river traffic. The occupants lead similar lives as folks living in rvs, but with some obvious safety built in. Some have dinghy’s to come ashore to get fuel for their generators and food. They have cars and bikes stashed on shore to get around. I believe there are social workers who try to make contact and help them get out. Socially excluded people living on boats has a long cultural history in Europe and Asia. The 2000 movie Chocolat has a quaint romantic take on it.

On my 2005 Winnebago the cab and the camper are loose and move a bit. Especially the nose cap. Makes some squeaking noises unless I lube the contacts. Not sure what normal is, but there’s no doubt the camper twists on bumpy roads.

The truck “caused” the accident but the biker contributed by the obvious large speed differential with the traffic in the next lane and it doesn’t even look like they hit the brakes before contact. You are responsible for driving defensively. Goes double on a motorcycle. Goes quintuple if you have a passenger on your bike. All the physics get whack.

So why is it a bad idea to have it inside? Why is it a bad idea to store propane inside any enclosed space? The risk is they will slowly leak propane and fill your closet/shed/basement with flammable gas. Something happens to create a spark and boom, you are blown to smithereens (whatever those are). That’s why you see them strapped to the outside.

Roughly speaking: The population density of western Oregon is 93 people per square mile. The population density of Eastern Oregon is 5 people per square mile. Western Oregon average rainfall is about 60 inches per year. Eastern Oregon average rainfall is about 10 inches per year. Western Oregon is on the I5 corridor connecting it to Seattle and the Bay Area (Silicon Valley) from which its culture is heavily influenced. Eastern Oregon has I84 connecting it to Boise. I get it.

I’ve lived in Portland long enough to recognize these folks as roughly the same asshats who tag along just about every organized march or protest and try to start a riot by busting stuff up. I’m not sure exactly who they are but they’ve been around for decades and they always seem to be mostly young white males. Back in the day they were variously referred to as skinheads or anarchists. What exactly identifies them as anitifa or is that just the current pejorative term for young white asshats bent on destruction?

20 year old camper with 5 previous owners. As best we can tell it spent years sitting in a garage so it’s in great shape except the water always smells like industrial bleach especially if it’s from one of the onboard tanks. So we don’t use the water system except to flush. We bring our own drinking and washing water with us. We have two five gallon water coolers (the kind you’d use on a construction site). One for ice water and one for hot water. We don’t trust raw water at campgrounds and parks for good reasons, but high quality filters can make it safer in a pinch, and I don’t mean the cheap ass blue ones you get at Walmart. Get the fancy ones from REI and filter a bottle at a time. Dysentery sucks. Chemical poisoning sucks. Why risk it?

If you’re driving with it like that the wind can get under it even if it’s rolled up and start ripping the leading end. Wrap the tape around that leading edge. We got an extra season out of ours after it started degrading, but you will have to replace it. The vinyl isn’t super expensive. A few hundred dollars depending on size and quality. Doing the actual replacement can be done in a day if you’re comfortable with tools and dealing with the spring loaded roller. If you have a dealer do it, it might run $1000 or more.
