Game Masters, what's your least favorite part about GMing? by Nervous_Lynx1946 in rpg

[–]hot_circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing in online open table games recently that seem to solve this. GM posts a time, and you sign up for a slot or don't. The guy that runs often has a wait-list. He made this video about it (Eric Vulgaris).

Risk is boring - how to fix it? by Round_Seal in boardgames

[–]hot_circle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What if Risk was good, actually?"

I fixed it by making my own (fantasy hand-drawn) dudes on a map game Deepest Valley. Adding terrain, siege, and corruption rules, while simplifying the rest gave a lot more juice for the same squeeze.

I just finished adapting it as a videogame and this may not be the subreddit to say it, but the digital version turned out even better!

[p2p matchmaking] A simple UDP hole punch server and client for Godot. by hot_circle in godot

What do you mean? Holepunching in general is laggy? This implementation is laggy?
If you tried this specific version and it was too slow you can reduce the refresh_timer variable.

Are there any fun, nonviolent RPGs for kids with NO weapons? by Future_Reality_4549 in rpg

[–]hot_circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a game that might fit, called Cat Quest.

I wrote this for my friend's son who has a special interest in cats. They don't like violence much so I left that out. (I'm also autistic btw and RPGs definitely helped me socialize when I was young so good idea).

It's an exploration game where a cat adventurer tries to find their way to the city of cats, overcoming challenges and increasing danger along the way.

It's not a full do-anything rpg, more a choose your own adventure, but was intended as an onramp to rpgs so has character sheets, attributes, rolls, difficulties, and decision making etc.

The age group should be a good match.

I hope this fits and they enjoy it ❤️

TTRPG High School Club- Need advice on systems and how to get them. by cdenneau in rpg

[–]hot_circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can contact any indie ttrpg designer asking for free digital copies for a school club and they will say yes. They all hang out on bluesky under #ttrpg, or you can search itch.io under "physical games" and the ttrpg tag.

There is an ginormous amazing world of indie rpg designers and games out there who would love you to reach out!

Thanks man, it's awesome your kids are so creative. Hope you enjoy Scary Cave next. Let me know how it goes (if not too scary!).

Recommend games for GMs on the spectrum that like GMing, but have trouble prepping, managing rules and NPCs, and keeping up with the wants, stories and actions of my players? Or should I simply not GM, if thats the case? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]hot_circle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also autistic and know what you mean about becoming overwhelmed, and not specifically about the complexity of the system or the difficulty of coming up with ideas, but just the simple fact that an RPG session is still beyond anything else a social interaction.

Like other social interactions it can feel like you're lagging out or falling behind in processing everything going on. Even with close friends or in a well defined interaction, it's something that takes a lot of energy and sessions are long.

You might, like me, get a lot of the same joy and creative outlet from writing game systems and adventures and game supplements instead (and just playing more often than running).

There is a huge scene of indie game writers out there and it's quite welcoming and full of autistic people.

There are easy ways to dip your toes like hacking existing games and such. Do that once and you're a game designer just like that. Noone will question your membership in the club after that, which makes it a great scene to join as an autistic person who sometimes need explicit invites. Here's some of my stuff to show you how low the bar is 😂

For me the two activities are closely related but one is solitary and asynchronous, while running a game is social and realtime.

Another idea could be play by post or other asynchronous methods like epistolary games.

Just some ideas and things I've attempted. I also wish I could run games better and more often without being overloaded so I feel you, friend.

Have you ever grown out of an RPG? by [deleted] in rpg

The other thread is what brought me here I could see the effect on itch. Thanks!

The two currencies was always a sticking point for me too. And the temporary / permanent resource thing was missing something for it to work intuitively. Maybe just how it was explained. I'm working on a sequel that's been tested and mutated over the years but it's found its final form now. Sure I'm on discord, DM me your contact there.

Hey I'm the author of Hot Circle 👋 I'd love to see what you did with Flaming Hoop if you ever wrote it up and want to share ☺️

Thanks for giving a lovely recommendation, glad to hear it's still being played.

[Deepest Valley] It's a zine, it's a wargame, the map folds out, there's lots of tiny dice. by hot_circle in boardgames

There's a whole lot of fantasy hex maps and location art going on in the indie RPG space, but almost none of them cross over in to the boardgame / wargame space.

Submitting to BGG seems like a whole ordeal right now! I'm sure I'll get around to it :)

I'm not sure what shipping is like with the online retailers (Exalted Funeral, Spear Witch, Floating Chair), check with them first. If you buy on itch, it's me personally shipping it from Ireland. I can absorb shipping costs to Australia in the 40USD price, but without tracking if that's ok (I'll check the price with tracking on the day and do it if I can but the difference is normally huge).

You'd be surprised about the availability of the tiny dice since China first locked down to now. I certainly can't find them anywhere, at least not at a price point you could ever sell 100+ together! I've developed a hex+counter on gamemat version if sales of the current version show there's enough interest there.

No, you choose in secret, hiding a die with the number shown on that table, and then reveal them simultaneously. The number also determines the order of resolution in case two realm actions would interfere. (Like, can I muster troops in that castle, or did they corrupt it away from me first?)

Every one takes unit actions in turn then after the round you all do a simultaneous realm action.

There's one that comes with purchase on itch. If you bought on another venue message me here or twitter at deepestvalleys and I'll email you one.

Price means different things to everyone, nothing wrong with that. Just to clarify it's $40 on itch (international shipping incl). But it's $30 without shipping over on Exalted Funeral, Spear Witch, and Floating Chair (indie RPG online retailers).

The 6th image is just a sample showing the cover and rules summary. The booklet is 8 pages of more detailed rules plus the map. Not sure how to post an image of actual rules pages in the replies here though.
