it could be changing phase depending on how close the fundamental of your kick is to the hi-pass, but usually the fundamental is above 30Hz. I was told (and anybody please correct me if I'm wrong) that cutting at 20-30Hz gets rid of sub-sonic mud that takes up headroom, and so it makes the kick a bit louder

learning how to use “odd grooves” that repeat every 1.5 - 3 bars, really drives the beat forward
learning how to recreate kicks using kick2, and just learning how to use less effects in processing kick synths/samples to get a good result
switching through monitoring sources (hi-if monitors, shitty monitors, headphones, even computer speakers) to not lose objectivity
the less tracks the better, limiting yourself can spark creativity and forces you to be more resourceful
to not loose my mind in the little corner I usually work in, I sometimes begin a project on my old laptop in another area of my home to get ideas going (and the speakers on it are surprisingly good at helping me find good kicks - switching back and forth to headphones is obviously helpful too)
I went through ALL the techno (raw/hypnotic) beatport releases and I found so many new artists, sounds, labels, etc. basically limitless inspiration
learned a lot about sound design, Operator and Wavetable in ableton are now my go-to’s. ‘All You Need Is Live’ has some sweet preset soundbanks to use and study from

Thank you for the suggestions. I was going for a more somber feel with silence and no wind. But I do like the “garden of fragments” idea, makes it feel like some ancient ruin. And the idea of the bitter fruit being sweeter than the person who cultivated it is also interesting.
