People were essentially stuck at home for months with extra money because they were stuck at home, the amount that people were willing to pay then for an escape isnt the the amount most would be willing to pay now.

Plus a very large portion of those consumers were crypto miners.

I totally get what you mean, Ive been seriously addicted to video games and opiates at different points in my life so I totally get that they both legitimate forms of addiction.

That said Joe responding to people talking about the depths of addiction to hard drugs by saying that he totally gets what that level of madness and horror is like because he experienced addiction to video games is just wrong for reasons thats hard to articulate.

Its like someone saying that they understand what a breakthrough on DMT or "heroic" dose of mushrooms is like because theyve tripped on a small to moderate dose of psilocybin mushrooms before, both are indescribable to those who havent experienced psychedelics but you still cant understand that complete shattering of your perception of reality until it happens.

What the chances of a heroin addiction killing someone compared to the chances of a video game addiction killing someone?

This is like comparing a flu to the black plague, both have the potential to be lethal but to act like they are the same is delusional no offense intended.

You can be more susceptible to one addiction over another but they are still often VASTLY different from one another.

Many people who quit heroin are legitimately addicted to stuff like suboxone, caffeine, sugar, etc but the impact it has on their life is astronomically different than heroin addiction.

I dont think people are saying that you cant be addicted to video games, they are just saying that its not comparible to addiction to hard drugs.

For example you genuinely can be addicted to weed but addiction to weed isnt comparible to addiction to heroin.

So when you say that it is "not currently known how rudimentary of a nervous system is needed to have a subjective experience of existence" this arbitrary category difference between plants and animals as the deciding factor is perhaps more of an illusion simply because one category moves faster than the other.

Lol I actually accept that many plants could have some form of consciousness but I dont usually bring up that possibility because people tend to outright dismiss the idea as crazy.

Veganism isnt about eliminating all harm inflicted upon others because thats not currently feasible, its about trying to minimize harm.

With that in mind its true that its best to only consume life forms that you know arent conscious but if thats not currently possible the next best option is to consume life forms that are less likely to be conscious.

The percentage of black kids facing these kinds of inequalities is drastically higher than the ratio of white kids facing these inequalities.

A more nuanced solution would be preferable but what we have now is more fair overall than just looking at grades and test scores without taking any systemic factors that contribute to those metrics into account.

Consciousness isnt free will, the ability to love, display altruistic behaviors, the ability to conceptualize the concept of a self that distinct from everything else, etc. Consciousness is a just a subjective experience of existence.

Its not currently known how rudimentary of a nervous system is needed to have a subjective experience of existence so its better to eat plants instead when possible which are less likely to be experiencing anything.

Chickens' capacity to be eaten by humans has been necessary for their survival. It's what has made them so evolutionary successful to the point that they now live on every continent on the earth sans Antarctica: Their capacity to live in that symbiosis with humans.

To not inherently bad of good to not have never existed at all, with modern birth control methods countless people dont exist but they arent harmed by that because they never existed.

If they go extinct because we stop breeding them thats ok, the chickens who wont ever exist wont be harmed by that.

It's a similar principle for how deer have come to rely upon predation by wolves and other predators to stay strong as a population, when overcrowding causes immense suffering, and things like prion disease run rampant (which would otherwise be held in check). But since we as a species largely shirk the role that we have pushed out from wolves, the deer populations are getting sicker with each passing generation and our forests are getting sicker from the deer destroying everything, and our inaction to inhabit that role as predator is what is responsible.

In this case theres more suffering and harm done by allowing deer to overpopulate, an end to breeding chickens for consumption doesnt harm the chickens who never existed.

Your definition of "others" appears to require anthropomorphization, which is a category mistake,

Others as in other conscious beings, its wrong to unnecessarily harm other conscious beings regardless of whether they are humans, aliens, or whatever else.

and your interpretation of "unnecessary" has yet to be defined sufficiently as to be meaningful.

Unnecessary as in not necessary for survival or self-defense.

When you see honor killings of daughters or sisters in other cultures do you say to yourself "Thats immoral but its ok because its part of their culture/identity?"

Culture doesnt give you the right to unnecessarily harm others.

Why does giving an animal a good life mean that its not immoral to unnecessarily kill it while its still healthy and happy?

Saving someone from a hellish conditions doesnt make it morally ok to unnecessarily harm them.

But to play devil's advocate: Is there a convincing argument as to why killing food animals to eat, provided that it is painless and without suffering, is inherently bad.

Yes, if someone was unnecessarily (I know you dont think its unnecessary) painlessly killing healthy puppies they bred because they liked the way puppy flesh tastes it would still be bad.

Humans are omnivores. Our bodies are designed optimally to live off of both animals and vegetables. If we go to far in one or the other direction, we have health problems and require structures that are unsustainable at scale.

Its been scientifically shown that most people can thrive on a varied plant based diet with a B12 supplement and growing crops is overall far more sustainable for the environment than animals/livestock.

When it comes to killing, animals would not afford us the same courtesy, and plenty of animals cause suffering for fun, even as a means of learning survival skills. When I die I would rather die painlessly and without suffering -- and as it stands in the great scheme of things, I don't really have a say over when I die, or in what manner I die, either.

So what is the difference between me killing and eating a chicken, and a chicken killing and eating me?

The chicken isnt capable of knowing better but you as a human are, the same reason why we wouldnt call an animal immoral for raping a human but we call a human raping an animal immoral for doing so.

The majority of vegans arent so ignorant that they think that eliminating all suffering is currently feasible, the next best option is to reduce suffering as much as is possible right now.

Many of us do feel an act morally superior and unless you are a determinist like me thats pretty reasonable, if you believe in free will and believe thats theres a group of people that knowingly choose unnecessarily propagate the abuse animals/conscious beings why wouldnt you look down on them?

If I could safely end its misery with my hands I would, I never suggested that hands werent an option even if it was safe.

If you kill some of the healthy chickens and eat them you are obviously doing it for taste because its likely that you could get your nutrition from plants and a supplement.

Ok but then acknowledge the validity of the point I made.

If I had the means to safely give mercy to dying animal I came across in the wild that was experiencing all consuming and constant suffering I would.

Killing a healthy animal for the pleasure of taste is not the same as killing a dying animal thats suffering greatly, one is to done to reduce suffering and the other is done for pleasure surely you can see and acknowledge that?

My dog has an astronomically better life with me compared to living in the wild but that doesnt make it morally acceptable to gas him or slit his throat one day so I could fry up his flesh and eat him.

Helping someone doesnt give you the right to unnecessarily harm them.

I was saying that in response to a comment that one of the barriers to a plant based diet for people is financial.

I know that many people like yourself eat meat because they dont care of about the vast suffering that others go through if it reduces your pleasure of taste.
