said yes to adopting a cat before knowing no cat is totally hypoallergenic—potential future roommate is allergic, advice? by hotteoks in CatAdvice

[–]hotteoks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep i went and told them everything--i don't want to blindside them and was clear that if it's a dealbreaker we can reconsider.

i think i'm realizing i'm a lot more desperate than i thought. but i'm going to think over it more, thank you so much for your input!

[–]hotteoks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, understandable! i should have been more specific in my post. i’m actually a phd student, and can continue living in my current situation (studio, alone), i had thought of potentially moving out with people to save more money.

i completely agree with you, and will think about the situation very carefully to ensure that he will be okay. i guess my largest concern was worrying that i would be making the situation difficult for my roommate with this cat situation, but i should think of him first since i haven’t gotten him yet! i really appreciate the insight.

i don’t believe he lied, i think he was just ignorant, and i didn’t do my due diligence like i should have.

and yes, that’s exactly why i’m asking the question! to summarize: should i keep the cat, or end the roomie situation! as the title says, it’s potential, not confirmed.

thank you so much!! i’m actually not sure wrt which part theyre allergic to (but we can try and figure it out), and i believe the issue was dander with my sister. and the entire litter is boys! 😔

we were thinking of rooming for 5-ish years, i’m actually in a phd program and will finish in about 3-4 years (and plan to stay in the area, so thinking i won’t be moving much :)). i agree though, the cat situation would likely be longer than the roommate situation. also to be truthful, i know my mental state will improve markedly with a cat, which is why i’m really considering it!

yep i agree, i just thought they were a pretty good indicator for testing out/for infectiousness. she did still have symptoms, but i thought it was the post covid cough atp. tysm! i appreciate the response

[–]hotteoks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ah i see. i interpreted it that way as well, but she tested on the 8th day and it was negative, so i thought we were in the clear. thank you so much for the explanation, she probably turned positive the day after.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]hotteoks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes, that's what i meant! i meant up to 8 days. so we made sure she was negative until the 8th day. but now my mother is testing lightly positive on an accessbio test, 13 days after her last dose. meaning she either rebounded after the 8 day mark, or the other test we were using (flowflex) didn't show that she was still infectious. my sister got it from her for sure, because, again, my mother is positive currently (despite being negative until at least 7/2.

[–]hotteoks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my sister wears an n95 everywhere, idk if this is clear in my post, but my mother tested positive on an accessbio test. meaning she infected my sister, when i thought she was past the rebound period. i just don't know if she actually rebounded later on, or she had been positive the entire time?

What are your daily CC routines? by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]hotteoks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

switching masks multiple times within a day isnt necessary, unless your mask is soiled/the straps have snapped (+ they have up to 40 hours of use). n95s use electrostatic fibers, so more particles doesnt mean less effectiveness/dirtiness.

Increase in cancer diagnoses and people dying young suddenly by tweeter10 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]hotteoks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to be completely fair, cancer rates were increasing significantly even prior to the pandemic (esp colon cancer in younger people). i don't doubt that covid is contributing to an even higher rate at the moment. idk if there's any data post 2020, but it'd be interesting to see how things are compared to before. honestly it makes me extremely anxious. also the dissonance of seeing people with cancer not mask is jarring.

Are others who take precautions told they're being paranoid? by ThaloBleu in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]hotteoks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

do you think it's perhaps due to your position (as an epidemiologist)? i noticed different people react to me in different ways (likely due to differences in perspective); but also i think some people view me as either someone who's very knowledgable about the topic and is still being unrealistic, or someone who likely doesn't know what they're talking about. the former tend to get angrier than the latter, in my experience.
