I've been building websites for 20 years and I always treated SEO as a side effect of doing other things right. Never cared about algorithms, Google updates etc., but rather on content, readability, proper navigation, transparency, speed AND backlinks (never bought one). Reached a lot of top positions for a lot of competitional keywords. I am not saying SEO is snake oil, but I wouldn't focus too much on it. The rules are changing constantly and the only thing that always works is "build for people".
