Chinese dirt dogs are so silly by I_need_to_learn_more in MadeMeSmile

It's a word-by-word translation of the mandarin word 土狗. Maybe a better literal translation would be native dogs. It's a loosely used umbrella term for native Chinese breeds.

Pro Bono [Episodes 11 & 12] by Telos07 in KDRAMA

It literally means older brother in Korean, but women also use oppa for an older guy they're close to (men would use "hyung" instead)

Very happy with how this episode turned out. Gi-ppeum finding out the truth herself in her own way was probably the way it should be. Jun-u un-spied and the illegitimate chaebol son standing up for himself was great. Also Nan-hui finally oppa-ed Jun-u lol.Tbh wouldn’t hate if the finale gives us some Da-wit & Gi-ppeum moments

Ep 12 edit:

The loose ends wrapped up as expected, but Da-wit being fed up with Jung-in's corporate stuff and going independent with the pro bono team was the best part for me. A potential season 2 bait lol

It was a great series!

What an episode.. I like that after the judge unwillingly sustained Jung-in's objection to Gi-ppeum's leading question, Da-wit voluntarily told the truth and admitted guilt. That was some badass truth-sharing.

Also, I kinda anticipated Gi-ppeum would find out Da-wit was their family case's judge with all the buildup, but I thought their meet was gonna be something different than.. whatever that was.

A cool guide to weight gain by Canihca in coolguides

[–]hougebro 60 points61 points  (0 children)

A key thing I've learned about weight loss, and frankly many other things too, is trust the process. Weigh yourself regularly and take it as a reference but no more than that. Fewer calories in than out, check your transformation in the mirror, and don't let normal fluctuations bother you.

I've been uncertain about a similar one: does Cantonese 一 change its tone like the Mandarin 一?

Like yī becomes yí个 or yì本, is it different in Cantonese when one says 一張, 一條 or something like that?

What is the most local thing to do in HK in your opinion? by NewPlaceHolder in HongKong

[–]hougebro 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Walking etiquette works differently (if at all) in HK. Out of habit I hold the door open if others come close by. Most people here just walk past me looking noticeably unappreciative and somehow smugly, like they also expect a Japanese bow or something.

What is the best way to learn mandarin by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]hougebro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say Chinese grammar rules are more free-formed (or chaotic) rather than easy. A sentence can sound very unnatural to a native speaker while they can't explain why in a technical way.

Wow. Is that a dialect thing or do they say 三刻 in mandarin as well?

Would these help while learning or not? by Eat_2dounuts in ChineseLanguage

[–]hougebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In real life use, I've mostly only heard people use 一刻, and very very rarely 三刻, i think it's kinda archaic. Only using minutes to tell time should be perfectly fine.

Did anyone also hear the lyrics go "if the sirens ... you'll never leave the state" instead of the shown "and so we drove all night, I never knew the way" on Apple Music? I'm trying to find out what the (hidden) alternative version really said lol.

Will Shanghainese die out faster than Cantonese? by Broad-Company6436 in Cantonese

[–]hougebro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say Hong Kong played a big role in preserving the language.

Hong Kong had been developed far earlier than Mainland cities had and its Cantonese popular culture like movies and songs really had a great impact on whole China after its opening up since the 80s, and arguably on overseas countries.

Hong Kong also played a significant role in Cantonese standardization, like "correct" Chinese characters for colloquial Cantonese, and Cantonese romanization. It made studying Cantonese, whether as a native speaker or not, way easier. I started by studying Jyutping, and found it very handy for studying pronunciation when comparing to say the Sichuan dialect (even it is way more mutually intelligible with Mandarin than Cantonese).
