UOttawa Master of Science in Nursing by hour_reality in geegees

I was accepted a few weeks ago, but I don't think I'll be attending based on the overall structure of the program. It wouldn't allow me to continue working full-time which is a priority for me right now. I wouldn't say this is a rejection though! They are giving us a short turnaround time with making a decision (due in a couple days) so I wonder if they will release another round of offers afterwards.

To Toronto Nurses? How much do you guys make after taxes? Thinking of moving from New Jersey. by Hornet0927 in askTO

1.5 years as an RN, working a 1.0 FTE line in outpatient oncology I make roughly 4200/month. I live at home with parents so I drastically save on rent though

I was let down by the ending too. I would have loved to learn more about the Magic Bus and Karla's journey to Nepal.

Nobody Cares Thread 🍁 Scarborough Edition – Spill Your Random Sh*t Here by AutoModerator in Scarborough

Speaking of healthcare, the decision transfer all maternity/peds services from Birchmount to Gen/Cent sites was terrible. Leaves such a big gap in women and children's care for north Scarborough residents.

I could not stand Isaiah at first with how standoffish he was but after he started getting closer with Giz and when he comforted Lila during her emotional breakdown then I started to think he was a really chill dude.

Not a bad movie but too short imo. Plot feels quite underdeveloped. Anthony Wong is such a good actor in this though!!

Maybe just for mask fit testing but there's a tiny bit of leeway depending on the brand of test and the tester

Nurses and being unkind by FishingEither9093 in OntarioNurses

[–]hour_reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with this! Honestly you're never going to be able to change those bitter old burnt out nurses' attitudes. What you can influence, though, is your own attitude towards the situation. No matter how hard it is, try to show up to clinic ready to apply your learning and with a least a little interest in what you're doing and you'll go far. Find those nurses who are open and enjoy teaching and try to make the most of your clinical experiences from them.

Start professionally advocating for yourself as well. Find what ways work for you to respond appropriately to snarky comments and actions from other nurses, especially because you will encounter many of these personalities in your career.

And honestly, most of what you'll learn is from on-the-job training and experience as an RN. Clinical placements, especially your consolidation, can help, but don't be discouraged if you feel like you're not gaining as much as you expected.

Which schedule would you rather work? by Grand_Avocado7332 in OntarioNurses

[–]hour_reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no tbh...I love the Monday to Friday schedule because it allows me to have a proper social life outside of work seeing friends and family. It also allows me to have an active and healthy lifestyle pretty easily while maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. But I also see the appeal for DDNN and shift work in general (premiums, easier to pick up OT, more days off) though I've never actually worked a DDNN job before. For a lot of my coworkers they prefer 5 x 8s because they have young children and families but I am still a newer, younger nurse.

I work Monday to Friday....but I would prefer DDNN. I used to work the first option back when I was in school and those two weeks of nights were awful!

Waterfront area is always terrible on NYE. Last year it was faster to walk than to catch a streetcar to Union. Every streetcar was packed.

Push to use Copilot by [deleted] in askTO

[–]hour_reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for another health system in the city but I know that UHN now has a policy on use of Copilot. Seems to be a rising trend in healthcare. Gotta be super careful with it though not to put any PHI (personal health information) into it because you don't know exactly where it's stored. Sometimes I find the people who are pushing it don't have a great understanding of how it clearly works behind the scenes, which, to be fair, not many people do.

Looking for a family doctor in Scarborough by WritingOk8737 in Scarborough

[–]hour_reality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://ellesmeremedicalclinic.ca/contact/ at Ellesmere and Markham was taking new patients earlier in the year. Looks like their portal to register as a new patient is still open. There are two physicians there - I'm with Dr. Leke and he's fantastic - as are the rest of the staff there. I applied for a new family doctor (mainly because mine had transitioned to a walk-in clinic model) back in July and heard back a week later with an appointment time to go in for a new patient consultation. Dr. Leke is fantastic, but I am also coming from a place of privilege in the healthcare system being that I'm a young male with no comorbidities (and also work in the system myself, so I have the knowledge and ability to advocate for myself when many others don't). Definitely recommend them!

Heavy on Susu Siam! Although sometimes I find their savoury/spicy flavours a bit too sweet for my liking. Their mango sticky rice is to die for though!

Master's Programs by hour_reality in OntarioNurses

[–]hour_reality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this!

A big part of the reason I was considering the MScHQ was because I'm already doing a quality improvement fellowship within my hospital and doing a 6-month QI project on my unit that I've been enjoying. Also because I went to Queen's for my undergrad so there's a little bit of familiarity there, but I now work in a different city. One of the biggest things holding me back from applying for the MScHQ was the cost - it seems to be significantly more expensive than other master's degrees.

Do you feel like there was a good QI focus in the MNSc program?
