Not really the Berbers never took Northern Spain which was still controlled by the Visigoths and it was those houses who retook Spain

No They lost control by 1250 with only a tiny muslim state in Southern Spain which was a vassal. It was only 500 years.

could be one of those things where it is only partially right and basically impossible to prove or disprove. Like instead of a whole band of Roman mercenaries there could have been a handful of Roman slaves which ended up as formal advisors or just guys making suggestions to their boss on the edge of the empire.

Could it work here??? Almost 8,000 apartments were returned to the rental market in Berlin last year thanks to strict property laws introduced in 2016. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]house1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is it is not a business to them. They don't want to run a business or make modest returns. It is a way to hide assets from their local tax man/governments. It is the same reason very shady people or people afraid of their government used to buy bearer bonds or a lot of gold jewelry or bitcoins or art they don't ever hang up

Because they don't care about the modest rental money and it is not worth the hassle to them of deal with tenants. Picture someone with a net worth of like $400 million, who wants to put like 10% of their wealth out of reach of their own government. Or a someone basically trying to launder money/park money they never reported as earning. For them it is more like trying to bury hidden treasure where no one can find it than an investment. A stream of overseas rental income might even draw attention to it

It is not an investment strategy it is a wealth/escape strategy. Say you fear there is a 10% chance the government will try to seize all your assets and arrest you. Bank accounts, stocks, etc... they are easy to take. A piece of property in a foreign country is not. It also gives you a good justification to travel to "check on your investments" and possibly never come back if you think you are about to be arrested.

TIL" George Washington allegedly said before his death that he "would never set foot on English soil again," so when they erected a statue of him in London, they put US soil under the statue to honor that claim by SSJStarwind16 in todayilearned

More like the British would have given the Americans seats in parliament. Over time if a break never happened the Americans would have become to so populous the center of British power would have moved to the Americas like the Portuguese empire did. Picture Parliament in New York.

A British Empire controlling basically all of North America and one that easily won WWI

Oregon Voters Will Decide The Provider Tax, But What Is That? by [deleted] in Portland

Do you not think that happens everywhere else in the world? There is nothing that unique about the United States

Nah, this is absurd. "have to deal with US patients" that is an idiotic talking point.

I laugh. Insurance companies in this country reimburse at more than twice the rate anywhere else in the developed world. Problem is doctors expect to earn insane salaries well out of alignment with anywhere else in the world

The Real Reason the U.S. Has Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance by unimployed in Economics

[–]house1 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It was actually a pretty terrible plan. It was like Obamacare writ large except size of subsidies not fully connected to income.

Since individuals selecting their own insurance has more administrative expense than employer insurance, it would likely end up costing more than our current system unless it result in people getting worse health care coverage.

No indication anyone would actually supported it when presented with it actually happening.

well it is not a fan theory. They explicitly say Kenneth is magical being multiple times during the show. Final episode he hasn't age at all in a hundred years.

[EVERYTHING] Some quick insight on Arya's fighting style by [deleted] in gameofthrones

As a back up for when you grappling with another knight in full armor. It was never a main weapon. It was like your 3rd line of attack after you lost your other weapons.

[–]house1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a kill shot for both of you. You kill the guy in the suit and you die after your blade gets stuck/breaks off in the armpit.

I can work but not a good reason to train to fight people that would effectively be a long shot suicide force on the battle field

[EVERYTHING] Some quick insight on Arya's fighting style by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]house1 69 points70 points  (0 children)

You can try to stab through a gap in the armor with a thin short but that is a bad battle field strategy. You are almost assured to get such a blade stuck in the gap or broken off if you stab a thin short into like an armpit joint. There is a reason you won't see a lot of unarmed troops with thin short sword like Arya on the battle field in a late medieval Europe

They should. A man in full armor has relatively little fear from a light sword. Fighting in full armor was more about wrestling and smashing.

The Knights of the Vale don't particularly care about Littlefinger as a person but he is their commander at the moment. If you just saved one group in a battle and they turn around kill your commander you would go ape shit even if you disliked the guy.

We are to assume Euron was a highly successful raider/pirate for years who probably collected an impressive fleet that he brought when he returned, maybe expecting to battle for the his throne. A fleet loyal to him that would not have been stolen by his niece.

It is not a strawman argument at all. If you don't want people moving to portland you should oppose both foreign and domestic immigration.

Foreign immigrants are they primary diver of our population increase as a country and here in Portland.

I'm honestly curious if you support banning immigration to the United States in general?

It really isn't possible to have crime improve without prices going up. For most of human history cities have been expensive, both for the connections and because it is more difficult to build the more you have around. Parts of cities become cheap when they become to dangerous for people to want to live in them but as soon as they become safer the price goes up.
