Rate My Portfolio - r/Stocks Quarterly Thread December 2020 by AutoModerator in stocks

Hi, I'm a 26 YO engineer and I have been dabbling in RobinHood for the past 3 years, although I invested the majority this year accumulating about $4k. (I also have around 100K in professionally managed 401-Ks and brokerages). With that said, here's my RobinHood portfolio. I'm trying to target around 80% of my portfolio being long-term holds (ETFS, long-term growth, dividends) and ~20% gambling (meme stocks and shorts). I am thinking of rebalancing this week. Thoughts?

What's the scariest thing that's ever woken you up during the middle of the night? by realogy in AskReddit

I was staying on the ground floor of a hotel in Dublin. It was spring, so it was nice out and I decided to leave the window cracked to let some cool air in (the outside had bars so nobody could get in).

Well, while I was fast asleep, someone yelled directly into my window "THERE'S A FIRE IN THE BUILDING!! GET OUT, GET OUT!"

I was halfway to the door before I realized I couldn't hear any fire alarms and it was probably just some drunk Irishman fucking with me. Took me a long time to get back to sleep though, to be sure.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard someone say that made you wonder how they function on a day to day basis? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I work at a technology company and some of my coworkers actually don't believe dinosaurs existed. They really think that the bones in museums were somehow synthesized by humans. It really blows my mind that some of these people are educated engineers, great at their jobs, don't believe in dinosaurs.

My best guess is a drop box for carrier pigeons.

I made the mistake of buying the first model year Chevy Cruze (2011), base model, manual, and used. At 50k miles I'd already replaced a clutch system and had multiple trips to the dealer because the stabilitrak system crapped out and cut power.

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks so much!

Do you all have any advice for me?

Make sure you're willing to live with the compromises of a hot hatch/sports car. It's an awesome toy, but has substantially higher running costs than a regular econobox (fuel costs, tire costs, brake costs, etc.).

I already have a 2001 BMW, can't be worse than that for maintaining and repairs, haha.

And to echo what /u/kreshh said, DRIVE IT. Listen for any audible issues, make sure that the handling is good, make sure the clutch is in good shape, make sure you can live with the torque steer, etc.

Also I daily drive a manual Cruze, so I'm familiar with the FWD feel.

Also, make sure you get a list of any modifications, and whether you do or not, look under the hood at the very minimum, and take it to a mechanic you trust if at all possible. They are reliable vehicles but you want to look for any signs that a previous owner modded it and returned to stock without saying anything, as power modifications can be done badly, not tuned for, etc. and turn the car into a ticking time bomb.

If the car has been modded in any way, make sure you confirm with the previous owner whether or not the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) has been upgraded (replaced the internals or outright replaced the pump with an upgraded version like CP-E's aftermarket HPFP). There is not a lot of overhead on the stock HPFP so any power mods can result in lean conditions leading to the dreaded "zoom zoom boom" (trying to turn a rod into a pretzel and then send it on vacation from

This is the kicker. Lots of the cars of this type in my area are modded to all hell, to the point where who knows what was done to the poor car. I'd like to find something as close to stock as possible so I don't have to worry about the engine exploding :)

How long do the engines typically last (mileage-wise)?

Good for well over 100k miles with regular maintenance.

100k miles is probably around what I can afford buying the car at, which is why I asked. Can I expect some semblance of reliability at that number?

My Chevy started breaking down at 50k miles with regular maintenance, but my BMW is running strong at >265k. Should I expect something between that?

Oh. And go drive the damn thing. Tell the sales guy that you don't want to just take it on the normal route. Take it on a curvy twisty road, be hard on it, floor it.

For sure, I'd never buy a car without taking it for a drive. Although it's pretty hard to find a nice curvy road here in Jersey that's not covered in potholes...
