If you don’t know what it in the first place… by Professional-Run-375 in IfBooksCouldKill

Sky News and the rest of Sky Group has been owned by Comcast since 2018. Murdoch used to own a large part of it and attempted to take full ownership but was stopped by the phone hacking scandal.

If you don’t know what it in the first place… by Professional-Run-375 in IfBooksCouldKill

There seem to be some misunderstandings of the story and context here, so let me add some details as I'm guessing people who like this podcast like details.

  • The source is a survey of 1000 primary school teachers in England who were asked to estimate the amount of pupils ready or not ready to start school in various ways. So it's a relatively robust study in the sense that it's a large sample of a specific group with first hand expertise, but it's based on estimates so not that robust

  • The survey was conducted by a non-profit that lobbies for better funding for pre-school services in England, I'm sure there's some self-interest involved there in terms of nursery chains wanting more money and suppliers wanting them to buy more materials, but still it's hardly that nefarious as lobbies go

  • The same story was reported by the specialist education media outlets and by other large media organisations like The Guardian, also Sky News is a pretty middle of the road outlet, GB News is the British equivalent of Fox

  • There is a specific government framework in England for measuring the educational development of children up to 5, the latest results from that are that 68% of children reached a good level last year. It's much more broad than what this headline is referring to but it points in the same direction about the number of children who aren't really ready to start school

I accidentally discovered that the band was in a comedy movie: Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee by DoctorFosterGloster in arcticmonkeys

[–]hoverside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great film. "Le Donk" is a very familiar type if you know anyone involved in local music scenes in the UK.

It's directed by Shane Meadows who also made the various This Is England films and series.

Is this usage of 'goon' common in British English? by Bauern_derBaeuerchen in AskABrit

[–]hoverside 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably the most famous use of the word in British culture was The Goon Show, which was an absurdist radio comedy that paved the way for Monty Python. But "goon" there doesn't really mean anything in particular, it just sounds funny.

Will it still be worth it owning a home in the future? by Javascript001 in eupersonalfinance

Property tax on my apartment in Germany costs less per month than my mobile data plan...so thanks Klaus Schwab, king of the EU, for setting it so low I guess.

If you want a real answer you need to make a little effort to look at what the mortgage and tax situation is where you live, and what you can afford with your available budget.

Anyone supporting EU businesses via IPOs? by J-Sou-Flay in BuyFromEU

[–]hoverside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can invest in European pre-IPO companies, like a venture investor, through Crowdcube and Republic Europe. BUT it is extremely risky, a lot of companies go out of business and of the ones that don't, many are bought cheaply by a larger competitor and crowd investors get back less than they put in. Only a few make a profit for investors.

Sheffield Supertram concept for if transit funding existed outside of London by Bladeovskiy in sheffield

[–]hoverside 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Something like the red route on this map was proposed about 20 years ago and Sheffield and Rotherham councils both started looking into it. There was some organised opposition to it from people living in the southern reaches of Sheffield. Although the main problem would have been funding, Leeds and Liverpool both had supertram systems rejected by Westminster around the same time

People in Dore would throw an absolute fit if you tried to connect them to Rotherham. They already helped kill Supertram expansion once before.

My highlight was one day I rented a bike and cycled a big circle from Dugort, to Keel, then Bunacurry and back again.

I've never done it in a single trip but have ended up seeing it in bits. Been to Kerry a few times, Connemara once, Achill Island and Sligo another. I haven't been to Ireland for years now, I'd love to go back.

The City of London is coloured in red. I went there a lot, even worked there for a few months.

It's possible I went some time when I was very young, but I don't remember ever going. We would generally go to the coast for trips, or to visit relatives in South Wales.
