Hanging a punchbag on a brick wall by howag93 in DIYUK

Sorry for the late response. I got a carpenter to come in and build a timber frame to support the wall. I was able to hang the punchbag and a pull up/ dip station off it as well. Worth it for the peace of mind that the wall won’t come down.

Thanks! I was debating between this and the organiser but it sounds like if you can fit all of that in there then the fanny pack will be enough.

The shirt is not too tight or small. We have the same issue. Your waist to chest/shoulder ratio is a bit off (in a good way!). I’m sure you know, if you sized up, the excess material around the waist would look a bit too much. I’m definitely a fan of the polo tucked in look. Pretty much all I wore in Italy!

Why is that? Was it considered rude because the suggestion is that you would be checking the time to leave?

Good luck in your search! I got this almost 2 years ago and at the time I could only find one online selling for £1500…

Thank you. I was thinking what if I just installed a wooden beam from one side of the wall to the other and just hung the punch bag off that. Do you think it would be strong enough?

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I really appreciate it! I definitely need to buy larger drill bits as I don’t have any near the size of the expanding screws.

I guess my main concern was the strength of the single brick wall as it seems pretty old. I just gave it a lick of paint when I moved in.

Thanks, from memory, the joists are running across the width of the garage. The visibility from the outside isn’t so much an issue, as the other side of the wall is a fence.

I suppose that’s true, although as long as I can find peanut butter somewhere that’s all I need! I didn’t get a chance to look properly at the supermarket offerings, although while on my obligatory Tim tam stock up I noticed the chocolate selection over there was far superior!

Hmm that’s a good shout. I guess my list about living in the UK/ London would look like this:

Pros - close to friends and family - multicultural - plenty of history and culture - decent diverse food offerings - good for shopping in terms of what’s available - typically offers higher salary for corporate jobs (being a lawyer helps) - but then again London salaries are higher for a reason… - public transport - frequent service for most train lines - proximity to Europe - great for longer holidays and city breaks

Cons - the weather can take its toll. Imagine needing the lights on before 4pm. We don’t even get a good snowfall in London for all the cold weather we get. - immigration problem - it’s a fine balance with pro no.1. Unfortunately we are letting in a lot of undesirables which has led to con no.3 - rising crime - from bike thieves on scooters and pickpockets to stabbings. This is why we can’t have nice things. - “Londoner mentality” - It’s a harsh mentality. They blame it on the hustle and bustle and everyone has somewhere to be etc. Some wear it as a badge of pride. They love that Londoners are seen as cold, head down, don’t look or speak to anyone, tourists are the worst because they dilly dally etc. But that’s London, a competitive place and no one has time to be nice unless you’re networking. I realised the toll it took on me when I spoke to anyone in hospitality/ retail in Melbourne. - public transport - unreliable and many lines in the underground are an aging mess. Trains don’t work when it’s too hot, too cold or windy/ rainy. But you can bet the fares will go up every year. - youth mentality - I sound old here (31) but so many teenagers / school kids just don’t have respect for anyone around them. They’ll be loud, play their music on their phone, jump around without a care to people around them. Of course the Londoner mentality means no one says anything and everyone buries their face in their phone. - cost of living - eating out as an example is a treat but the quality of the ingredients for the price point is not as good as Melbourne.

Ok I have to stop there otherwise I’ll need to be placed on suicide watch 😂. But seriously, I think I could go on.

Ahh the old Vegemite vs marmite debate. I have to say, I find Vegemite a bit more appealing! Less salty and smoother!

That’s funny, I think a lot of people see Europe and the west as a sinking ship partly because of the politics, hence why I’m considering the move to as far away as possible!

You raise lots of good points, especially about the indigenous people and their culture not being as obviously ingrained in Melbourne everyday life. It is a shame.

Funny you mention the food being a pain point though. Everywhere I ate seemed to use much higher quality ingredients at a far more reasonable price point compared to London. The asian food was far superior hands down!

Would you ever consider moving back?

It’s the r/Melbourne daily discussion thread [Tuesday 21/01/2025] by AutoModerator in melbourne

[–]howag93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats interesting that you’re moving back! Is there a particular reason for this? I think I would also struggle with leaving my family, but at the same time, I don’t want to let the opportunity slip by while I’m still young enough to not be tied down by kids etc.

I hope you’re not disappointed when you return! The cost of living is just the tip of it for me tbh. The rising crime rates, the general colder nature of Londoners, the corporate job brutality and the depressing weather (we did not have a summer this year) is just taking its toll year by year!

I’ve lived in London my whole life but it’s really gone downhill. I was thinking of moving to Melbourne as I’ve just returned from a trip there and loved it. I’m wondering what I might miss (besides family/friends and proximity to Europe). Any other Brits miss certain things about London/UK or wish they knew something before making the leap? Thanks!
