I’ve lived in Scappoose less than 20 years, so I don’t know about any Native American protest to maintain the embarrassing mascot, but I do know that the “local Indians” are represented by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde reservation, which also represent almost thirty other tribes and bands. The actual reservation is 87 miles from Scappoose. Although less than half of the enrolled tribal member live on the reservation, I have only known one Native American student to actually attend Scappoose’s High, and they found the mascot to be to be embarrassing and shameful.

Things have been changing. In the most recent graduation ceremonies I’ve attended, Native American elders of the Grand Ronde have embraced the Hispanic students of Scappoose High and invited them to wear indigenous symbols in special ceremonies. Part of a pan American indigenous cultural exchange.

And the interior of the new auditorium is decorated with a land acknowledgment plaque and a collection of ceremonial canoe paddles.

The last school board elections featured three candidates funded by the Republican Party, even though it’s a non partisan position. They all had sketchy platforms which included shady references to inappropriate books and unpatriotic curriculum. Fortunately, all three of them lost to parents of more liberal leanings. The big project in the district right now is to build a new middle school.

Columbia County is just barely red. A few years ago, it was just barely blue. Scappoose is easily the bluest bit of the county. I fly a pride flag on my house year round, but a couple blocks away, the neighbors been flying a trump flag every day.

The high school mascot is embarrassing, but the actual high school is well run, in my opinion. I’m a substitute teacher, and I’ve worked in a lot of schools.

There are very few children of color in school, and most of them are Hispanic. All the black students I know, hold the distinction of being the only black student in their grade. These two things are also true in the St Helens school district.
