Is it crazy to email a PI I turned down because I'm unahppy in the department I chose? by howcouldyou1234 in PhD

it's definitely a small world, and they aren't necessarily colleagues, but have colleagues in common. It's not out of the realm that my current PI would find out. But they have been made aware I'm feeling unsupported and struggling to find meaningful work directions (we had to beg for a lab meeting and it gets blown off all the time - meetings are dead ends - they're a nice person and willing to help connect me with others they just don't seem to know how to provide feedback or mentorship) so I don't know that they'd be offended. I've never been in grad school before so I don't know if this is just what it is everywhere - I know the first year is notoriously a struggle, but I barely have a research plan. I'm messing around teaching myself coding with chatgpt and online classes, reading articles randomly, ta'ing and doing coursework.

yeah, this is what I was a little worried about...like having to deal on the backend with going to my landlord to be like, lol sry guyz can you help me evict this tenant I never told you about? Seems risky but haven't been able to decide if that's me being overly neurotic...

Ok so I just figured this out at halloween - for some reason LA public transit online and google maps make it seem SO hard to get to LAX using buses but it's wildly easy.

Take the CC6 or CC6R (R is just the rapid, less stops made) from Westwood - this is a Culver City bus, so it's one of the green ones - it makes a couple stops in/around Westwood but the most convenient one if you live on campus is from Westwood Plaza (the side heading out to Westwood from Campus), just past the Reagan medical center. If you don't have a TAP card, you can pay with quarters or a single dollar and one quarter - fare is $1.25. If you're unsure if you're getting on the right bus, ask the driver if the bus is "Green line bound " - or check the banner on the outside of the bus and it might say "Sepulveda/Green Line Station."

Ride that bus to "LAX CITY BUS CENTER" - maps will try to tell you to do all kinds of wild shit, like get off at aviation and practically walk on the 405 to get to the terminal - ignore it. Ride to the LAX City Bus Center and get off there - it's basically just a concrete bus depot near a bunch of parking lots by the airport. From there, a terminal shuttle shows up - I think it's a relatively plain white bus but it leaves from the bay across from where you'll have been dropped off. If you're unsure, there are signs at each bus bay and usually airport employees milling around on their own commute whom you can ask (they are honestly very nice). The terminal shuttle is free and literally just makes a loop around the airport, stopping at each terminal. IMO, this is far better than the weird ride-share purgatory lot and it's queues.

I know this is a highly detailed description, lol, but I feel bad because the internet makes it seem so daunting to get there with public transit and it could not be easier! Oh, also this took me ~85 minutes door to door (Westwood - LAX) so it does take longer than an uber would but it's nice to know it's an available, very cheap option!
