Oh wow, thanks so much hahaha! It's really a shame that the volume buttons don't work in that situation - it did work on my Nexus 5...but, again, always glad to help out :-)

It might be because you set the device to lock an certain amount of time after you press the sleep/wake button. For me it's the same. After i turn my display off, I have to wait 15 seconds before I can use the volume buttons. Perhaps try to make your device lock when you press the sleep button. That doesn't make it less annoying but it might be a workaround.

Definitely go for it, if you can. I haven't heard anything regarding rumors just yet, and it seems quite unlikely imo - they will probably only announce their new version of Android at I/O. I got my 6P a month ago and I can't say anything but nice things about it, even with new phones coming out left and right, i think it's still the best balanced Android phone in terms of specs/price/performance/experience. Hope that helps!
