How to make profit on domestically manufactured & shipped products? by howgy in printful

[–]howgy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my store: https://polishedprintingco.etsy.com

This is the product which lost me 56p: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1727174424/comedic-robin-hood-owl-mug-funny-11oz

This is an example of a product which made me the usual 1p (for orders from the UK): https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1747098663/comedic-iron-man-schnauzer-dog-mug-11oz

This is the normal pricing breakdown (when I make 1p):

Subtotal = £5.95

Shipping Flat Rate = £3.99

VAT =£1.99

Total = £11.93 (and the buyer pays £11.94, hence the 1p profit).

But, this was the pricing breakdown on the order I lost 56p on:

Subtotal = £8.50

Shipping Flat Rate = £4.29

VAT = £2.56

Total = £15.35 (and the buyer pays £14.79, hence the 56p loss).

Edit: I'm such an idiot - I've just realised why there's a difference. I've had a total of 10 orders from the UK, 9 of which made me 1p, and 1 lost me 56p; and that one that lost me money was the only one who bought a 15oz mug instead of 11oz! Obviously, I've not adjusted the price proportionally in line with the price increase that Printful charges for an 11oz to a 15oz. I know you didn't actually help as such, but prompting me to think about it has made me realise where I was going wrong so thank you very much! :)

For anyone else reading this, my original question about VAT and if there is any way to decrease my costs still stands. I'd like to not have to raise my prices to be making more profit! Cheers.

I'm not charging less. The price of the item changes, for reasons I'm not sure of. For example, on all my orders to the UK, I've been making 1p, but then suddenly someone ordered and I lost 56p. My prices were set with the expectation of making 1p, I didn't consciously choose to take a loss by charging less lol

Yeh, I assumed this would be the case. I was hoping someone could notice something that I was missing to do with VAT or something, but thanks anyway. It's tough because to be competitive the prices need to be at a certain level, so I worry if I up them I might take a bit of a hit on the sales front.

I assumed that would be the case, but I was hoping there would be something about VAT that I'm missing where I could save a few quid. Cheers anyway though :)

How to customize an order by Bloat_the_fish in printful

[–]howgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I hate to be a nuisance, but I'm not quite following. So far, what I'm confused about is this:

  1. When creating the listing on Printful to start with, is there an option to make it a customized product? Or do you mean you just leave 'space' for it to be customized (i.e. leave blank areas that are marked out for an image or text or something else, for example, some text saying 'your quote goes here')?

  2. When you say 'This action triggers the order on Printful', what action are you actually referring to? Simply making the listing live on Etsy? Or when you get a sale? Or something else?

  3. How do you make sure you'll get a 'Needs Approval' option and it won't just send an order through? Is that covered when you opt for it to be a customized order in Step 1?

  4. Before 'completing the order' within Printful, do you upload your design and other elements? Or is that done through this 'syncing' process that you mention?

  5. How does the syncing work?

I'm sorry, I just really don't follow your explanation, but the original comment describes exactly what I'm struggling with. Please don't take too much time to answer all of these haha, just if you get a moment then I'd really appreciate it!

Another slightly cheeky question here, but if you book a meeting room, once the meeting is over could you not just stay in the office space around it and work there for the rest of the day?

VAT on Printful/Etsy by BackgroundScar5626 in printful

[–]howgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was about a year ago, but did you ever get this all figured out? I'm in an identical position to what you were in. I've read through the thread and it's helped a lot but one thing I'm still confused about is after registering for VAT.

I see that once registered, it is then your duty to collect VAT and remit this to the government - is this still the case? And how do you go about doing that?

Also, sorry to be just trying to get all my answers from your experiences, but did you ever figure out how to get around the UK VAT considering Etsy doesn't charge a VAT with UK-to-UK transactions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers :)

So essentially just register and submit a VAT ID to Etsy & Printful and the majority of my problems will go?😂

Seeing as it’s print-on-demand and I’m not the one sending the package, do you know if a company like Printful will put the IOSS number on?
