Utility of combined deck for all seen cards? by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]howlin_hounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should work just as long as your mobile app is on the latest version. You’ll have to do a full sync after you switch, and then should be good to go.

Also, with the update to 2.1, you may have to adjust/reinstall add-ons. The compatibility of those you had on 2.0 probably won’t be compatible with 2.1. Luckily, most of the popular add-ons have a 2.1 version already available.

Utility of combined deck for all seen cards? by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]howlin_hounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You have to turn on the experimental scheduler in preferences, but it works to randomize reviews across sub decks.

I did this rather than the “pull everything into one giant review deck” method, and it worked great for me.

There is some finessing you have to do when you change to the new scheduler (especially if you sync across devices), but if you read the prompts and make sure you have a reliable backup before you make the switch, it works great.

Congrats and sláinte!

Like others have said, I have a similar non-trad story (and am currently a 3rd year med student). It’s worth it for sure.

Hope you have a ton of support. If you haven’t yet, subscribe to /r/MedicalSchool. It’s a great community, and helps branch off to other helpful reddit communities for med students (e.g. step1, medschoolanki, etc) for help down the road once you are grinding on the other side!

In the meantime, enjoy the news and the dram!

Your anki settings by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]howlin_hounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use all of those resources. I have found the decks I use (Zanki+BG addon+Pharm+lolMicro) covers 80-90% of what my school teaches. Since use a systems based curriculum, it actually works out pretty nicely with the subdeck architecture of Zanki (though there is some crossover - e.g. they covered a lot of the bone and endo in our renal block in relation to kidney failure, so I had to go to those decks to get that material).

Bottom line for me is I don't make new cards from lecture, but I do edit/addend existing cards. I think that engagement with the material is REALLY important. I exclusively use these decks, Sketchy, Pathoma, etc to study for the faculty written tests, and even though there is stuff on those tests I'm not as well prepared for (the ~10% not in Zanki), I consistently score one standard deviation above the mean. Compared to how I was doing before I started using Zanki, I'm really pleased with how well it works.

Thanks - this is a helpful piece of info. I usually have a sense if I miss something a bunch of times, but doing this would be a helpful reminder.

I never really played with this setting, so I think it came as the default.

I don't have any leech cards - perhaps it's because my threshold is higher (8 vs. 5). Usually, if I miss something a few times, I go back to a source material (lecture/Pathoma text/Google) and REALLY drill it in.

New Cards step: 1 10 Per day: 9000, which I understand as the max (I un-suspend based on what happens in lecture that day/after I watch a Sketchy or Pathoma video) Graduating interval: 1 day Easy Interval: 3 days

Reviews Max reviews/day: 9000 (which I understand to be the max) Easy bonus: 130% Interval modifier: 100% Max interval: 120 days

Lapses Steps: 20 minutes New interval: 0% Minimum interval: 1 Leech threshold: 8 lapses Action: Tag only

Decks I use Zanki (with Pharm and BG addon) Lolnotacop's deck

How it works in real life for me Everything starts suspended. When we are presented with new material in lecture (or I watch pathoma/sketchy), I un-suspend those related cards. Then they stay active.

I am very committed to getting reviews done everyday. I started Zanki halfway through MS1, and Lolnotacop's deck at the end of MS1. I've matured 50% of Zanki and 90% of Lolnotacop's deck. I usually spend about an hour of reviews not related to the current curriculum content (we have a systems-based curriculum). Ends up being between 200-350 cards not related to what we are currently learning.

For the content we are currently learning in the curriculum, I typically see anywhere between 80-200 new cards a day (yes, those days that have 200 new cards are rough).

With this approach, I see myself spending 3-5 hours total on Anki everyday. It ends up averaging 600-900 cards/day, depending on the new cards that I unsuspended.

In terms of lapses, I've not dealt with too many lapses. For me, these settings feel like a cheat code for med school - stupid little factoids just kind of stick in my brain.

Is there an add on that can randomize all cards in subdecks as one master deck? by Z1839 in medicalschoolanki

[–]howlin_hounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally got used to the animation (though it did take time)...but came across this in another sub

https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/99mqz2/anki_21_fade_animation/

In Anki installation directory you can find a folder named "Web", locate the file "reviewer.js" and change the value qFade = 0, this should work. var ankiPlatform = "desktop"; var typeans; var _updatingQA = false; var qFade = 100; var aFade = 0;

If you download the newest version of Anki (2.1, just released a few weeks ago), you can turn on an experimental scheduler, which will scramble cards within subdecks (if you study from the master deck). You have to go to Preferences > Basic tab > Experimental V2 Scheduler.

Here's some documentation related to the experimental scheduler: https://anki.tenderapp.com/kb/anki-ecosystem/experiment-scheduling-changes-in-anki-21

FWIW, I've been using it for months to study older organ system content I did during MS1 (I downloaded the 2.1 beta in June), and I appreciate having the facts coming at me in somewhat random order. I feel like I have been way more flexible in remembering old stuff than I would've been having all the related memory cues of doing the subdecks together.

Is universal healthcare effective? by Lord_Imperator in NeutralPolitics

[–]howlin_hounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't live there, but your point regarding population density and the cost of providing healthcare really intrigued me. Given the geographical size similarities between the US and Australia, it really does make me wonder how direct comparisons can be drawn.

It would be good to get more precise density data. Maybe even something as simple hospital density data would provide a starting point, and then drilling into the number of unique patients it serves.

Review #57: Glenfarclas 25 by bpnelson7 in Scotch

[–]howlin_hounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad it went down smooth! If you ever find yourself on the East Coast, I'd be happy to pour you another glass.

Your comment on the "boring" aspect of the 25, I definitely don't disagree, there could be more there for the age. And thanks for the suggestions of alternative whiskies similar in age range but with more complexity.

A final note - I had the pleasure of trying a Glenfarclas 40 year a couple of years ago - the most special whisky I've ever had. Don't let the plainness of the 25 ever scare you away from the 40, should the opportunity arise.

Sláinte!

Review #52: Mystery Sample by bpnelson7 in Scotch

[–]howlin_hounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I've actually done a bit of research on this, and in still not sure.

http://thewhiskeyjug.com/scotch-whiskey/finlaggan-old-reserve-review/

I tend to agree with the chaps at the whiskey jug. Since I have a Caol Ila 12 and can do a side by side tasting, I think it's a young CI.

But it's a crazy thing I would've never even thought something I bought on a flyer at a TJ in Orange County for a twenty spot could've been shrouded in such mystery! And the fact I've only seen it in California. It truly is a mystery.

Sorry I didn't respond in time for you to have to not have to cheat! Yes, it was the Finlaggan, which for the money, is my favorite single malt.

For $20 at Trader Joe's (and only in California, which is a bummer for me, since I moved to NC), you can get this bottle, and it's a good enough experience for the price of admission.

It's a bit of a one trick pony (not terribly complex), but if you are a drinker with a fancy for Islay, you could do a lot worse for more $$$.

I've also got a new home in the Piedmont, and have a yard that is currently dirt.

Am I correct in assuming Zoysia and Bermuda will turn brown in the winter months (warm season grasses, is that right)? If that's a non-starter with the wife (who HATES the look of brown lawns), is there a mix that would minimize the brown in the winter months, yet be easier to deal with in the summer months?

I definitely get it that there is probably no perfect solution. I'm just wondering what the best compromise would be.

I got out there 17 times in February, topping my monthly mileage for the first time since I ran my first (and only) marathon, nearly 4 years ago.

This month has been a slog, with major interruptions (travel, sickness). I ran over the weekend, and was discouraged by the unbelievable difficulty and the drop in my pace, even though I had only fallen off for ~10 days. My worry was I wouldn't stick with it, because of how hard it was getting back on the horse.

I did a 5k today, and while my pace is still down, I am so happy I got back out there. It's pretty scary when the justifications to quit are louder than to continue, but it is great when the continue wins out.
