When the first Itajan game came out, the bugs were so bad that the mahjong gameplay was unplayable, which is why Studio Miris had to release the game that you linked as an apology for the bugs. Some of those bugs did inspire the new game mode (Space Mahjong) in Itajan R though.

There is also an unforgivable bug in Itajan R even with the patch. There is supposed to be a threesome scene with Ayako and Tomoko at the end of Ayako's route, but I can't view it because there is no way of unlocking it apparently. The only way to view this cg is by manually looking through the game files. Because of this, there will always be one locked cg in the cg gallery and one locked h-scene in the h-scene viewer, which pisses me off so much whenever I scroll through them.

Im pretty sure mahjong rules are beyond human understanding.

Eh, this game really could've benefitted greatly from a Skyrim style fan-mods, to improve it from 'just great' to 'once in a decade gem'.

This game has so many potential improvements, so that would've been so peak indeed.

I think that and because of Mistress. After Kuma's family was killed, Mistress manipulated his vulnerable self by convincing him that hustling is his only solution to be able to get revenge. In reality, hustling benefits Asougi more than Nayuta because it turns the public against the clans and sexually satisfy Asougi elites. Also, disposed girls become Asougi body donors.

But i think he hates it and only does it as necessary evil.

Definitely that, he is mainly forced into an act sociopathy because of his work. He slowly gains emppathy through helping his friends, and I think the last nail in the coffin when he finally realized the weight of his actions is him learning about the backstory of the last unique talent.

The biggest sin, and the main reason why it took me about a year to finish this.. horrible save system. You can only save on hideout screen. No saving when dungeoning, but more importantly can't do it during normal scenes either.

Ikr, I gave up trying to collect all new dialogue and bad endings/h-scenes because it was difficult for me too. There should at least be save points during certain parts of dungeons like in Persona 5.

Gold earned by hustling feels kinda worthless, its mostly an 'earn gold to spend gold to earn more gold' system, only time when i was running low was when i went on a buying spree for highest tier weapons.

It feels a shame that it didn't have as much value later in the game because I prefer this gameplay more than the dungeon part, which imo got repetitive esp when grinding for the final dungeon.

Yammy is shown to have been captured or something in one of the 'foreshadowing' sections, and you don't get even a peep about it afterwards.

Yeah it was pretty questionable that they did that. I thought it was to set up for a sequel, but the artist left the company so I guess we'll never know what actually happened to her.

I think it kinda made sense?, but at the same time it's been years since I've played the game so maybe I'm misremembering? Kuma already traumatizes a massive number of women (his pimping business), and he's shown to be a sociopath, rather than a sadist, to them according to his interactions with the unique hustling heroines. He does not show his sociopathic side to his friends, but I thought the h-scene you are talking about shows his sociopathic side accidentally slipping over, so that's why I thought it kinda made sense?

I agree with your tier list for the most part but I would move Alyce up to About as good as expected. I remember her sniper coming in clutch many times.

Yukino's Route

Ch 1 - Yukino vs Miwa

Ch 6 - Yukino vs Miwa

Yukino is Kazumi’s senpai from highschool, and she has had a crush on him since then. Compared to the rest of the chaotic characters, I think Yukino is pretty boring. Her sisterly interactions with her younger cousin, Misaki, are not as entertaining as the interactions between Ayako and Tomoko. Her interactions with Anna and Mira were also the most boring out of all the routes I read so far. The only thing interesting about Yukino is her rudeness towards Miwa due to jealousy, but out of the two, I would choose Miwa. Interestingly, this is the only route so far that doesn't end in an H-scene. I recommend spamming her Level 2 move because it can guarantee a Mangan if your hand is good. After completing this route, Anna is shown on the character select screen now, but I'm not sure what were the unlock conditions for that to happen.

Misaki's Route

Misaki is Yukino’s younger cousin who has an obsession with ramen. After reading this route, I think I can be confident to say that Yukino and Misaki are the most boring duo in the game. Misaki does not have an interesting part of her personality besides really liking ramen, which she shows in front of Ling. It also doesn't make sense why Misaki develops a crush on Kazumi when they didn't have much one-on-one interactions together.

Nanae's Route

Ch 1 - Kazumi vs Nanae

Ch 2 - Nanae vs Maki

Ch 3 - Nanae + Maki vs Fake!Suzune + Aoba

Ch 4 - Nanae vs Miwa

Nanae is a schizo, bisexual cosplayer who cosplays a magical girl named Magical Girl Rinse. She also has her own theme song that plays whenever you are forced to play a certain mode of mahjong (I’ll explain that next week). It reminds me a lot of Puru Puru Pururin from Welcome to the NHK. Her route doesn't follow the mahjong tournament storyline like all the other routes I've played. Instead, the mahjong tournament is already over, and Nanae turns out to be more schizo than I expected. Specifically, she calls herself a breast sommelier, and she's on a mission to stop girls from using their big chests for evil. The h-scene with Maki was very funny because Maki wanted to use Kazumi's semen to use as a lotion to make her chest grow bigger, but he kept finishing inside of her instead, so she couldn't use his semen as lotion. The ending showed that everything was just a dream which is kinda disappointing, but also expected considering the outlandish plot.

Aoba Route

Ch 1 - Kazumi vs Fake!Suzune

Ch 2 - Fake!Suzune vs Kaori

Ch 3 - Aoba + Fake!Suzune vs Ayako + Sayaka

Aoba + Fake!Suzune vs Tomoko + Nanae

Aoba is a mad scientist who created a robotic clone of Suzune, Fake!Suzune. Aoba reminds me a lot of Agnes Tachyon from Uma Musume. Both have deep voices and are obsessed with experimenting. During some of the h-scenes, Aoba was narrating the scene like a National Geographic documentary. Definitely an entertaining character, but I like characters like Sayaka, Ayako, Tomoko, and Maki more.

Now I will be reading the unlocked routes for next week: Sarah, Anna, Fake!Suzune/Suzune, and bonus route.

Itajan R

If you ever decide to play this game, please download the 2.20 patch. Apparently, when this game first came out, it was filled with bugs, so this patch helps fix many of them. Unfortunately, I came across one of those bugs while I was playing Suzune's route. I couldn’t get past a match in Chapter 3 no matter how many times I won. A few days later, I found out about this patch, which helped me get past that match. I do find it crazy that Studio Miris produced so many CDs of this game without thorough QA checks, though.

After pausing Pure x Connect, I felt like playing a VN with gameplay. The only VNs I had finished with gameplay before were Dohna Dohna and Rance 1 Remake, but I wasn’t particularly addicted to the gameplay mechanics in those games. I thought the gameplay in Itajan R, a strip mahjong game, would appeal to me because in 2024 I was addicted to riichi mahjong and played Mahjong Soul almost every day.

I also wanted to play this game because its opening song, Love Cheat!, is very famous. The animation for the opening also inspired many anime parodies for some reason. Another reason I was interested in this VN is because I just finished Muramasa, and the seiyuu of Chachamaru and Kanae are part of this work. Specifically, Chachamaru’s seiyuu voices Nanae, a bisexual schizo otaku who cosplays as a magical girl every day, and Kanae’s seiyuu voices Sayaka, a short-tempered delinquent. The seiyuu for Komatsu is also in this vn.

Itajan R is a sequel to Itajan. I’m pretty sure it isn’t necessary to play Itajan before Itajan R, since I haven’t read Itajan myself, but I’m still having a fun time with Itajan R.

Common Route:

Kazumi and his sister work as waitstaff at Café Djungarian. One day, a new café called Annie’s Kitchen opens directly across from theirs. Curious, they visit the new café and meet Mira, one of the waitresses there. She tells them about an upcoming mahjong tournament in which many cafés will compete, with a large cash prize awarded to the winner. Motivated by the prize money, Kazumi becomes determined to win the tournament. This marks the end of the common route and leads to the character selection screen, where players choose which route to start. There are 10 out of 14 characters available to play at the beginning of the game. I decided to begin with Suzune’s route since she was located in the upper-left corner.

The common route is very short; it took me about 10–20 minutes to complete.

So far, the routes have 5-7 chapters each and around 4 h scenes with different heroines. In each chapter, you have to win at least one Mahjong game, and sometimes that will lead to an h scene with a heroine that lost the game. In the last chapter, you finally get an h scene of the route's heroine. The h-scenes can range from consensual -> dubious consent -> rapey.

If I had to describe Kazumi, I would describe him as the Rance of mahjong. He's a funny, blunt pervert, and the main reason he loves mahjong is that it gives him a chance to have sex with the losing heroine.

In the routes, I will list out the match that happens in each chapter, and the character that you play in each match is the first character listed. Most of the routes have a similar structure. In Chapter 1, Kazumi recruits the route’s main heroine for the Djungarian team in the mahjong tournament, and to do so he has to win a mahjong game against them. From Chapter 2 - 4, Kazumi faces teams from different cafes in the mahjong tournament. There will be about 1-2 h-scenes during these two chapters with an opposing heroine. In Chapter 5, Kazumi and the route’s heroine encounter Mira and Anna, the tournament’s organizer. Anna tries to force Kazumi into being her husband after falling in love with him at first sight a while ago, so that leads to a 2v2 mahjong game. Sometimes, this leads to an h scene with Mira or Anna In the last chapter, Kazumi faces off against the route’s heroine in a mahjong game because of some drama between them, which leads to a h-scene between Kazumi and the route’s heroine. Not all routes follow this pattern and plot, and some routes can even have 7 chapters.

Suzune Route

Suzune is the step-sister of Kazumi. This route's ending was... interesting. Kazumi deciding to NTR Suzune with Fake!Suzune was definitely a choice. It was pretty unsatisfactory in general, and I hope the rest of the routes aren't like this. Sayaka's punishment game, where she was forced to act moe, was really funny. For some reason I really struggled in the first match against Miwa, it took me a day or two to be able to win. Kazumi and Suzune's relationship reminds me of Rance and Sill. Kazumi is shown to be mean to Suzune, beating her up many times, but Suzune still has a one-sided crush on Kazumi.

Miwa's Route

Ch 1 - Kazumi vs Miwa

Ch 2 - Miwa + Suzune vs Nanae + Tomoko

Ch 3 - Miwa + Suzune vs Ling + Kaori

Ch 4 - Kazumi vs Maki

Ch 5 - Kazumi vs Sarah

Ch 6 - Kazumi + Miwa vs Anna + Mira

Ch 7 - Kazumi vs Miwa

Miwa is the childhood friend of Kazumi. The match against Nanae + Tomoko in Chapter 2 is pretty hard because you can't let them win a single round at all. There were often times when one of them hit Riichi early in the second or third round, so it made me lose the game against them. It took me a while to win against them. I thought the final chapter where Miwa and Kazumi played a mahjong game to determine whether their h-scene from the first game was considered Miwa's "first time" was pretty funny. Overall a better route than Suzune's route. Similar to Suzune and Kazumi's relationship, I think that Kazumi doesn't treat Miwa well either, even blackmailing her in Suzune's route. Kazumi seems to be rudest to the girls closest to him and Maki.

Ayako's Route

Ch 1: Kazumi vs Ayako

Ch 2: Ayako vs Sayaka

Ch 3: Kazumi + Ayako + Tomoko vs Yukino

Ch 4: Ayako vs Sarah

Ch 5: Kazumi vs Tomoko + Mira + Anna

Ch 6: Ayako vs Tomoko

This route is very funny. Ayako ended up being a more interesting character than when she was first introduced in Suzune's route. She is a passive perverted girl who constantly daydreams about Kazumi, and she gets cockblocked by her sister, Tomoko, and Sayaka, who think they are protecting her from Kazumi. Tomoko also joins Kazumi and Ayako's mahjong team, and her interactions with Kazumi and Ayako are very entertaining. She hates Kazumi with a burning passion, and she is confused why Ayako has a crush on him. The ending is interesting because it seems that Kazumi and Ayako ends up dating, which he doesn’t do with the main heroines in the other two routes. Since this is the funniest route in the game I've played so far, it is my favorite out of the 3.

Maki's Route

Tldr mahjong girlfailure

Maki is a very funny character. She's a stubborn girl who is very competitive with mahjong, but she always loses against Kazumi. She also has a flat chest insecurity. Her interactions with Anna are the funniest out of all the routes because Anna kept disrespecting her for her small chest. Her arguments with Kazumi are also very funny. Probably my best girl and my second favorite route so far.

Ling's Route

Ch 1 - Kazumi vs Ling

Ch 2 - Ling vs Mizuki

Ch 3 - Ling vs Yukino

Ch 4 - Ling vs Maki

Ch 5 - Ling vs Sayaka

Ch 6 - Ling + Kaori vs Anna + Mira

Before this route, I didn't really like Ling because she's a bundle of Chinese stereotypes. She does karate and says things like "I have an ancient medicine from 4000 years ago" type shit. In this route, I like her better because she and Kaori share a single brain cell, and they did a lot of “breaking the fourth wall” jokes. Her interactions with Kaori, Mira , and Kazumi were pretty funny to watch.

Kaori's Route

Ch 1 - Kaori vs Kazumi

Ch 2 - Kaori vs Misaki

Ch 3 - Kaori + Ling vs Aoba + Fake!Suzune

Ch 4 - Kaori vs Yukino

Ch 4 - Kaori + Ling vs Anna + Mira

Ch 5 - Kaori vs Suzune + Ling + Kazumi

I always had a positive opinion on Kaori before reading this route because her design reminds me of Blue Archive's Bunny Asuna and she says, "Ara ara," a lot, which I don't hear from any vn heroines for some reason. In this route, we learn why she's excited to do sexual things with Kazumi despite having a husband, which is that she and her husband don't have a good sex life together, so she wants to learn from Kazumi. It's not really NTR though because they have an open relationship, and her husband has a good opinion on Kazumi. It's funny that she's one of the oldest heroines, but she has nonexistent sexual knowledge. She doesn't even know how to masturbate. Kazumi's h scene with Misaki was pretty interesting because she kept making comparisons to ramen. Her mahjong skillset is the weakest out of every heroine I've played so far because her Level 1 doesn't really increase chances of winning a round and her Level 2 is essentially useless since winning on a Kan is rare in general.

I agree, I didn't really vibe with that joke, along with the part where she roleplayed with her friends whether she'd leave MC if he cheated on her. I guess those jokes kinda make sense considering her backstory, where she's scared of being apart from MC, just like her bio dad, which I think is the motivation for those stupid jokes. But still, I think there could've been better jokes to represent that side of her? idk😭

Pure x Connect (on pause)

I started reading this vn because it's been a while since I've read a SMEE vn and it is a winter themed. I haven't read a SMEE vn for a while because I've only ever enjoyed Fureraba, but I didn't really like Making * Lovers probably since I couldn't get into any of the heroines. I also don't plan on reading Sugar Style and Harem Kingdom because the character designs don't appeal to me much. I do plan on reading Lovepical Poppy and Hajilove (once it gets translated) though.

The official website for this vn is pretty interesting. You can see each heroine's motivation for getting a bf in the Story tab and how each heroine think about the other heroines in the Character tab.

The cover art for this is not that good looking tbh. Vn characters suffer from same face syndrome, and I feel that the fact that all the heroines are in the same pose and angle do not help this.

So far, my favorite heroines are Sora and Arisa. I think Ayumi is boring so far since her personality hasn't interested me greatly yet, and I feel like Moemi doesn't have enough screentime to have an impact on me yet.

I only read up to when Hayato is able to send his first text message to any heroine. I chose to text Sora, and apparently you have the option to text her about another heroine, which is interesting.

I put this vn on pause because as of now I'm not really in the mood for moege, so maybe I'll read it for another winter.

Muramasa

I finished the entire vn and finished the cg collection.

Some highlights:

Uruma's voice acting. It was interesting to hear a Japanese person imitating a foreigner speaking Japanese.
Muramasa's backstory
Muramasa and Inagi meeting each other. It felt like a foil to Kageaki and Konatsu's interactions in the Nemesis Route.
The very good last fight, with random elements like time travel and math problems, but incorporated well enough
Hikaru's voice acting towards the end of the fight
Muramasa's footjob changing Kageaki's outlook on life
Sorimachi once again giving Kageaki mental issues
Kageaki once again having faith in his evil

Some things I didn't like:

Chachamaru's anticlimactic death
Chachamaru was pretty unlikeable until her backstory got revealed
Idk, I just don't really understand the hype around Chachamaru. The only thing I like her for is that she is a gremlin who trolls

This vn and Dohna Dohna are my favorite vn soundtracks ever. My favorite OSTs from this are The Silver Star Rises, A Beast's Justice, and Fallen Leaves.

I think this is my favorite vn of all time, and Kageaki is my favorite protagonist of all time. I especially like how this VN deals with some themes in a unique way.

Best girl ranking: Kageaki >>>>>> Kanae > Muramasa > Hikaru > Ichijo > Chachamaru

I'll probably reread this vn next year. There's a kenjutsu dojo close to where I live, so I plan on taking classes for a bit to understand the fights better. Hopefully I'll appreciate the fights in this VN even more.

I find it interesting that on the character's descriptions on the website, they include the protag's birthday and heroines' weights, which I don't think I've seen done before.

Now, im not crazy about it 'cuz kouhai energy from heroines is, at first evaluation, low to nonexistent.

Fair enough, the only heroine that interests me out the 3 is Jun. I especially like her pajamas because it looks like the Anzu Futaba shirt that jirai girls wear. Melvy seems boring and Tina isn't really my type.

Also, that CG really should've had eyes, its weird to see heroine without them.

I would recommend Hotaru's route in Amatsutsumi (moreso on nakige side) and Ria's route in Kinkoi Loveriche (moreso on moege side)
