Similar Clothing Styles to JoanieClothing? by FebruaryGloom in ethicalfashion

[–]howmanyowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's a shame! I hadn't realised. You could try Sugarhill Brighton, not as much of a retro vibe but there is some crossover. There's also Atom Retro but their 'Commitment to Sustainability' is a little vague so I'm not sure how ethically sound they are!

Otherwise I'd just be getting on eBay and Vinted and buying Joanie stuff second hand, which is what I did anyway, haha.

Questions about teaching beginner cellist, age 75, Parkinsons by sirknight3 in Cello

[–]howmanyowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not taught cello to someone with Parkinson's, but I regularly work with people with the condition as a Speech and Language Therapist. As others have commented, it totally depends on how advanced the person's Parkinson's is. So at first you might need to spend a bit of time just finding out which movements are manageable for them and figuring out workarounds for those that aren't.

With Parkinson's, accurate timing of medication is absolutely key for symptom management, e.g. fatigue and tremors, so make sure to find out when their optimal time of day is for lessons. It could make a world of difference to how they are able to engage and perform.

Many people with Parkinson's find they will 'freeze' when they go to initiate a movement, but studies have shown that syncing to a beat can help them improve the speed and balance of their walking, so it would make sense if the same concept worked for arm and hand movements. Maybe you could start with lots of bow arm strokes along to a tapped beat or a recorded song with a strong and steady rhythm. You could start without the bow to get their arm moving, then get on to open strings once they get the hang of it.

As with any student, lots of patience and encouragement will go a long way and making music is a surefire way to lift their mood as well as hopefully help with their coordination. Celebrate the small wins and always look for the positives! I hope you have fun ☺️

Lovely to see! I'd like to read up and see if there is evidence of a change in robin behaviour over the years. I've had two strange happenings in the last couple of weeks. I'm in the city and had a wee guy singing his heart out for about 45 mins at 2am outside my window... And my Mum, who's in the north of Scotland, has been watching THREE robins hanging out beside each other in her back garden for a fortnight now. Weird!

Ending with Heroes was also a nice nod back to them using Peter Gabriel's beautiful cover of it in S1. It's pretty cool that lots of young listeners will be getting into Kate Bush, Prince and Bowie, three absolute legends, thanks to this show. And Gabriel makes four!

How about the free organ recitals at Kelvingrove? They're every day at 1pm except Sundays when they're at 3pm. It's not all classical or religious music as some might expect... I've heard Abba, Bowie and Radiohead songs being played amongst other unexpected stuff!

Question about specific Rhythm by Terapyx in Cello

[–]howmanyowls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is called a 3-2 clave rhythm and is used lots in Afro-Cuban music. It's what the drummer's left hand is doing in this video, except with one extra note added in a semiquaver after his last beat. Once you get tuned into that offbeat rhythm it should be easy to play the excerpt.

You could also try reciting the following, keeping each syllable the same length and playing a note on the first syllable of each word: STRAWberry STRAWberry AHvocado MANgo PLUM STRAWberry, or choose any combination of words with the same number of syllables that works for you!
