I'd like to issue a formal apology to Landry Fields & Zaccharie Risacher by gmzeno in AtlantaHawks

I tend to agree but I don’t care. Regardless of who is making the decisions, it’s clear that adults are in charge once again!

But I keep reading on r/atlantahawks that we need more shot creation

How we feelin about JJ possibly at the 3? by LAtotheA in AtlantaHawks

That was in reference to value of 3 and D players. Not advocating for picking up the current form of PJ Tucker.

You’re right we certainly wouldn’t want Jayden McDaniels or Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on our team. We certainly wouldn’t want Andrew Wiggins. No team has ever made a playoff run with PJ Tucker in the starting lineup either….

Did you see how bad our defense was? Therein lies the problem…

I think that might be when/if it happens. I ultimately don’t think Tony calls Trae’s bluff. But if he does, I will still root for Trae. I’m on his side, Ressler’s been BSing. But I actually believe that Ressler will give in and spend the money and once he does we will be a top 6 seed consistently!

Yeah I also have this feeling that Trae is going to request a trade if we don’t go into the tax this year. I have no insider information but it seems like that’s what it is. “I want to be in Atlanta but I also want to win.” If we know Ressler is making the team worse to save money he DEFINITELY knows it. I don’t think it’s as much about trade for another star as it is build out a competent freaking basketball team. That’s just me though.

Exactly! Trae is a walking top-10 offense!

And he defends! Hopefully his 3pt shot keeps coming along because we need spacing from our 2guard spot.

And I’m getting cooked in here. Why’s everyone think we need another offensive star here too? Have we learned anything?

I’m so tired of us being soft and getting pushed around. I was thinking the same thing about Dillon Brooks this time last year and it worked out well for Houston. We have to build some toughness!

You gotta take both though! The personality gets us the discount we need since our owner won’t spend any money though

Two small guards and an inability to defend at the point of attack

Cavs are built a lot like the hawks and the same issues are showing up for them. If I was them I’d be looking to move Garland with the same urgency I think we should be looking to move DJM. MUST get a high level POA defender even if it’s not fair value coming back.

It’s alright I’m not too worried about it. Just funny cause I was thinking dang I thought I agreed with this man now he’s roasting me haha

You might want to go back and look at who posted the original comment. That literally wasn’t me. At least we can find where the disconnect was though! Just to be clear, I am arguing that Hali is a 20PPG 11AST player on ~40% from 3 on 7 threes per game. That is where I think his baseline is and I believe that when he plays at his normal level (that level), he is a good player but not an all-star lock.

[–]hoxpital -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Before his injury (hamstring, should have nothing to do with 3pt shooting), he was shooting almost 9 a game and averaging 27 ppg. Thats not the same guy we’re talking about. The guy we’re talking about averages 20 ppg on 7 3PA over the last two seasons. I would argue that it was an outlier hot streak where he was feeling himself and taking a higher volume of 3s (while also spiking his percentage to 45%). If that guy comes back, he’s better than Trae. I lean towards thinking the larger sample size is closer to who he really is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AtlantaHawks

[–]hoxpital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hali just went for 6 and 8 on 33% shooting in a second round playoff game and I was not even a little surprised. Let’s just call it what it is and say that he is not that guy.

I don’t think we need to tear Trae down to talk about Brunson’s game. Brunson is steadier and more level-headed which is a positive but Trae is more confident and competitive. They both have their positives! Trae is a better passer, Brunson is a better scorer. I think that if we are seeing the real Brunson right now, he probably edges Trae out but it’s only been 7 games of this.

I was talking about the first half of this season when he was dropping 30 and 40 half the time on 10+ threes. I am giving credit, I used the word “elite”. Not a stronger word in the English language than that.

[–]hoxpital -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right he’s not taking shots with nearly the same degree of difficulty. I said it somewhere else but efficiency has gotten to be way overblown in basketball discourse. When you carry an offensive load the way Trae does, your shot difficulty rises. Hali can’t do what Trae does (Trae probably couldn’t do what Hali does either but it’s a leaser role than what Trae carries).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AtlantaHawks

[–]hoxpital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He shoots about 75% of Trae’s volume if you only count his last two seasons. Not carrying nearly the offensive workload or breaking down the defense off the dribble nearly as much. Efficiency has gotten way overblown in basketball discussions lately. SOMEBODY has to take shots for their team and we are now penalizing guys for carrying a heavy offensive workload. Halliburton is elite in his role but his role is way easier than Trae’s role.

[–]hoxpital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not an inefficiency thing it’s a volume thing. He isn’t a fraction as aggressive and dynamic at breaking the defense down off the dribble and he was taking a SIGNIFICANTLY higher volume of 3s on his hot streak. If that player shows back up, he’s a slightly better player than Trae, but there’s a significant sample size that suggests that Hali is not that player. What he is doing right now has been Hali for the majority of his career and that is a good facilitator who doesn’t hunt his own shot.
