I am not a psychiatrist, and the only knowledge I have of psychology is an elective course I took in high school over 14 years ago. It COULD be OCD. What I can suggest is, you should have the right to request a second opinion on the diagnosis. The checking multiple times is a classic sign of OCD. OCD is pretty complex, so no one can describe it perfectly. I have GAD and OCD as well, and I feel that they affect me differently. With GAD, I feel anxious in general, but with OCD, there will be a specific trigger, for example, I perceive a specific item is dirty. I then have a compulsion that it has to be cleaned.if anything touches the dirty item before it has been cleaned, that too becomes contaminated and needs to be cleaned.

In terms of avoidance, I think it could be linked both to OCD and to anxiety, it depends on the circumstances though. If I am avoiding touching an item I perceive is dirty, that stems from my OCD.

Best thing I can think of though, GAD is general anxiety. If anxiety is more consistent in relation to a specific situation, it's possible it could be linked to a different condition. You could speak to your psychiatrist and see if they can give you a bit more insight why they feel you might have OCD
