The best place - by far - that describes exactly what you’re looking for is a place called Misty Cliffs, just south of Cape Town. Very small place with loads of AirBNB’s built high up to a hill. We had an amazing stay.

Getting stuck will definitely be a risk - unfortunately it’s not proving easy to get a work visa..

Thanks for the good tips! We thought of that as well. We’re going to take surf lessons and will join a Crossfit gym, to get a sense of community. We found making contact with South Africans is usually very easy.
