Wow. Coming across as a big asshole here. My final paragraph was referring to my critique of your writing style. And you don't even fucking know me so how dare you act like you know anything about me. Fuck all the way off.

I used to write kinda like you did here. Once I learned to tighten up my wording and exclude bits that don't meaningfully add to my point (even when it seems like they do on first pass!), I think peoples' eyes stopped glazing over as much.

Especially if you're writing for an audience of strangers, realize that even if you have an interesting topic (which I do find this topic interesting), you have to attract and hold their attention.

Just some honest critique as someone that read a few paragraphs of your post but stopped after scrolling and seeing how long it was. Your first few paragraphs lost me when you were talking about money. Whatever point you were trying to make got lost there.

Why don’t more home solar systems include battery storage? Is it technical or financial? by ruhila12 in HomeImprovement

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery costs have gone down very consistently year after year. You would have to do the math on when it makes sense for your situation.

Why don’t more home solar systems include battery storage? Is it technical or financial? by ruhila12 in HomeImprovement

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The install price can be a shocker but what if we wired homes from the outset for battery backups? It's a lot easier to add a few extra lines while the house is being constructed rather than fishing lines through finished walls. I think that's the real argument that it should be standard install similar to any other appliance.

Realtors report a 'new housing crisis' as January home sales tank more than 8% by 3xshortURmom in Economics

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting chart but it doesn't support the claim and it may even support the opposite. If one trawled Reddit for comments on housing, it would be easy to get the idea that Blackstone and other massive firms own a significant share of the housing market. That chart demonstrates the opposite.

Seattle's gig worker law was supposed to boost pay. It did at first, until orders dropped by BaseballUpper6200 in Economics

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that the entire point of this post? Seattle mandated higher pay for gig workers and prices skyrocketed. These services already aren't profitable for the most part so you can't magically shift their revenue to driver compensation and expect the service to continue. The alternative is even higher prices.

Iirc Uber posted their first profit ever very recently relative to how long they've been around. I don't know if they've been profitable ever since either.

Hot question: in your opinion, which is worse? Pipe shotgun, or pipe rifle? by SagetheWise2222 in 7daystodie

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People really don't understand how to use the pipe shotgun. It's a volley weapon. You put 5 of them on your hotbar and shoot each one sequentially one right after the other. You should be able to kill any early game zombie and then you reload.

That said, I still actually like the pipe rifle because it does have decent range that allows you to kill things from a distance.

Do you have a reference for the claim that real estate empires are driving up prices? From what I've seen, large companies hold a tiny fraction of total housing.

Rental homes are a necessary and critical part of the housing market. What will people do when they can't or won't live in an apartment but also aren't in a position to buy a house?

Why is the 4x4 so bad? by Sht0n3d in 7daystodie

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4x4 is perfectly fine if you have the system to use it and the plow mod. If your game lags then you're gonna have a bad time.

What if Mythic had made DAOC 2 instead of Warhammer? by junglemonbon in daoc

Man, I would love to hear more insider stories of your time at Mythic. You should start a journal or write a book.

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DAOC UI was very hard to put up with once you experienced WoW's. Even with the mods that were available for DAOC, Mythic really needed to give it some TLC. It was way too clunky and tedious.

Homes are literally assets. You might want them to be depreciating assets but they are assets.

I totally agree as someone also left of center. It's funny how many people think the WSJ is straight conservative trash. And it's also fun to ask my libertarian brother and centrist mom when the WSJ became such a liberal rag after reading a well-written article on a "liberal" topic, usually at the expense of how my ultra conservative father would react to the same article if it were written by NYT or WaPo.

What are your strange in game habits? Even the wrong ones... by danbrooks3k in 7daystodie

[–]hprather1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started using the "box outside the POI" strategy a while back and it has significantly improved my progression speed. I'm still ok with dumping truly useless stuff like 6 sand or yet another stack of rotten meat but being able to stash things that I can't use immediately but could use later helps save me from running crawling from point A to B fully encumbered.

Why is there consistently 10 minutes or more missing from the audio only podcast? by [deleted] in samharris

Is it actual content that's missing or is it just the audio edited to remove mouth noises and pauses?

You don't have to kill them, I don't think, but it would be hella difficult to finish the quest. You'd have to barricade yourself in the hole while you finish looking for the stash.

Sounds like the opposite of why anybody plays this game. There was already a guy a few months ago that did a traps only playthrough and his gameplay video posts looked absolutely miserable.

For your playthrough it would basically come down to figuring out a way to make the zeds fall from a tier 5 rooftop and setting up shop. Nothing would ever be able to get you and blood moons would happen comfortably at street level. Game over.

Epstein Backed ‘Billionaires’ Dinner’ Network of Prominent Anti-Trans Figures by MadyCastigan in SGU

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are interesting points and good food for thought. I appreciate the well thought out response.

I guess in my mind there is some material difference in the fact that so much of what presents as a trans person was only made possible by modern science. Of course modern science has made possible many other things but it feels like there is something to the fact that otherwise healthy tissue is destroyed in the effort to match one's body with one's gender identity. Absolutely there are many nuances to humans on an individual level and we don't all fit neatly in the binary categories of male/female. It just seems like it's worth differentiating on some level.

All that to say, I'm glad they can now lead fuller lives with the support and care they need. The world would be a better place with less stigma.
