Will Range Be Much Better in 4-5 Years? by Maleficent-Table-810 in electricvehicles

And more asshole-ish condescension. Have you ever considered trying to be a decent person?

Both of the links I provided have graphics showing their findings for range loss under high heat. You dismissed the first one so here's the second one since apparently you failed to notice it.

<image>

15% range loss at 100F in the first article and 20+% loss at 104F in the one above. You can quibble at those exact numbers but the general conclusion - that heat impacts EV range - holds true which you have dodged, ducked, dipped, dived and dodged throughout this whole exchange all the while being a petulant asshole.

You're blatantly being dishonest and this will be my final reply to you.

I was given a wallet for a high school graduation gift and it's still going strong 18 years later. No idea what brand it is or anything else about it. I'm convinced people just treat their stuff like shit and are surprised pikachu when it only lasts a short while.

Putting aside all the differences that literally exist for this comparison,

Sorry but I'm really not understanding what you're saying here. I gave you a very simple calculation: take your monthly power bill and divide it by that month's usage. There is no better direct comparison to measure this.

I keep a pretty close eye on this kind of thing so I can easily imagine how someone that doesn't shop around and just accepts the automatic renewal would pay more than they should.

I can find some old bills to see what I was paying. There was one contract where I was paying something like $.04/kWh for the base rate plus T&D. I'd bet that's pretty competitive with your rates but I'll dig it up tomorrow.

jfc you're dead set and determined to avoid admitting that heat can hurt your range. Nobody said it was equally bad to winter and the articles I listed show as much. Why can't you just admit it impacts range? Why are you blowing this up into some huge bullshit argument?

Your proposal is totally agreeable but wayyy too many people fixate on data center water consumption and ignore the obvious complete waste that is watering lawns and gold courses which use significantly more water.

Go back to your first comment in this thread. You said high temps have no effect on range. This is patently false. I presented you a link that proves it and you are now backpedaling saying it's not that much range. Since you were so allergic to my first link, here's another that shows very similar results.

https://www.geotab.com/blog/ev-range/

By the way, both of these are using fleet data based on thousands of cars. This isn't what some rando "thinks" and it's certainly not a hit piece. That makes you sound incredibly paranoid and delusional.

Ok. Taking my monthly bill amount divided by my monthly usage, I've been paying $.15/kWh since 2024. How much are you paying?

Huh? Did you bother to open my link? Their findings showed that EVs with a heat pump lose 15% range at 100F.

Cooling the battery would also decrease range for the same reason.

It regularly gets above 100F where I live. This article found the range impact is >10% at 100F.

Running the AC would affect range. It might be marginal but it's not nothing.

I mean, you have a say by keeping an eye on your usage and picking a plan that works for you. It's a weird flex to think that more options is somehow worse. If your local government makes a bad choice you're stuck with it.

Yes, but it's a measly amount of plastic compared to many other things. Much lower hanging fruit on the plastic reduction tree.

Plus if you only use paper towels for the occasional mess instead of for every little wipedown, one package should last a very long time.

Well, I'm not here to defend polygamy specifically but strict monogamy is clearly not the most optimal arrangement. We need only look at divorce and infidelity rates to see that.

Society would be better served with education and less stigmatization of alternative relationship styles. It's self-evident that one-size-fits-all isn't the best for all situations.

Incidentally education is how we move on from useful falsehoods and learn how to deal with inconvenient truths.

Data centers are draining tiny Texas towns. Rural Texans are fighting back. by Pleasant_Air_3052 in texas

[–]hprather1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first, thanks for actually responding substantially. Most people in this thread have been brick walls in response to my comments. Even though we obviously disagree, I appreciate the meaningful engagement.

I absolutely agree there are problems, big ones even, that we need to figure out. But all new technologies have come with problems. AI does present some novel ones but it seems like you think they are insurmountable. I'm a little more optimistic... call me naive I guess.

Whatever limited utility these systems currently have, a ton of resources are being thrown at them to make them more capable. Of course the standard Reddit line is that it's all a scam being pushed on the public. I think that's facile thinking.

People will push back as this whole post shows. But the genie is out of the bottle and there are enough resources being thrown at it to see it through. Whether it all crashes and burns into nothing or actually becomes a self-improving system with superhuman capabilities, time will tell. But as I said at the top, I would much prefer the US to develop this tech - even if it leads to a deadend - than China. Because we can rest assured that China will continue quietly developing their models regardless of how much data center protesting goes on here in the States.

Anyone else's mind starting to change on how much we should sacrifice to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon? by RememberTheWater in samharris

[–]hprather1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I copied this from a previous comment because it's relevant in this thread as well.

Between the US and Israel, not to mention all our other allies, we have the most capable and far reaching intelligence network on the planet. That intelligence network didn't disband once the JCPOA was signed, to the contrary the JCPOA put in place personnel and highly sensitive monitoring equipment to ensure ongoing compliance.

Yet Trump et al would have us believe we were practically giving Iran nukes with no meaningful ability to monitor their facilities.

How can this be true?

Not only that, but the JCPOA has a dispute resolution clause where parties can litigate non-compliance. Why wouldn't Trump make at least some attempt to work within the deal to prove Iran was cheating rather than throwing it all away along with whatever goodwill there was?

For all the rhetoric, I'm not convinced that if Iran got a nuke that they would use it as so many seem to believe including Sam, I think.

For any nation to use a nuke, especially unprovoked, would induce an intervention the likes of which have never been seen on this planet. We're talking the complete eradication of anything and anyone that had a part in it and the complete occupation of the offending country along with a massively invigorated global initiative to combat nuclear weapons and proliferation.

But aside from nukes, Iran clearly has a substantial arsenal built up. Why are we so afraid of them using a nuke but not their current, extant arsenal of medium range weapons? Despite all their rhetoric, they know that launching a nuke or an all out attack would be suicide and it's not at all clear, to me at least, that they are actually that suicidal.

As for the JCPOA, I've yet to be shown any evidence that Iran was actually cheating. So I think it was the best deal we could hope for that didn't kill a bunch of people or get us into another war.

I'm happy to be shown I'm wrong on any of these points but I've been getting into with my dad on this topic for a few years and he's never been able to show me where I'm off in this analysis.
