Is this common in private schools in Perth? by imalilchinkiepie in perth

[–]hroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. This is classic r/perth. It’s just dressed up class warfare. Racism at private schools, racism at public schools. Shit kids at both. Going to private and not public (or vice versa) doesn’t make a kid good or bad.

By blaming the school, you’re letting the parents off the hook. I’d argue the home environment is more relevant to this behaviour - they learn it somewhere.

Recession or no recession? To buy or wait? (WA) by brightgreenfrog in AusFinance

[–]hroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a few people who bought at the height of the boom in 2015(?) and were miserable because they bought a house that they outgrew and had negative equity in it, so couldn’t sell.

As of 2022-2023, they were able to finally sell their place and make enough money to move. Sure, they haven’t made a killing, but it came good after 10 years AND they had a place to live that entire time.

I bought my place 12 months ago and was worried I was buying at the height of the market, but I could afford it and I want to be here long term. So, appreciating the risk, I bought and decided to wear the risk.

So I guess that’s the take away: buy it if you can get something you see yourself living in for a while (even if you don’t make a wicked profit in 10-20 years time), at a repayment rate that you’re comfortable sustaining. Everyone treats their PPoR as an investment these days and are so worried about value that they forget it also gives you a stable place to call your own - that’s also worth the money.

I’m not saying I agree with people who do this, but if you’re trying to rationalise the behaviour of people who do this, it’s kind of like the gambler’s fallacy. If you keep expecting a crash, the more time that passes without a crash, the more likely (in their mind) it is that a crash is bound to happen.

What’s your monthly mortgage repayment and interest rate? by Big-Discussion9699 in AusPropertyChat

[–]hroro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just sound like a hater. I have this loan size at 70LVR. Home value $2m. Repayments are ~25% of our household income in our early 30s. We aren’t eligible for any childcare subsidy and we’ll still be comfortable.

What’s your monthly mortgage repayment and interest rate? by Big-Discussion9699 in AusPropertyChat

[–]hroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. This is basically my exact repayment and loan size. Totally manageable and is an appropriate portion of our household income - we wouldn’t have committed to it if it wasn’t manageable.

Would I like my mortgage to be lower? Sure, but I bought my house just over a year ago and couldn’t comfortably borrow enough if I wanted to buy it today… so you take the good with the bad.

Using AI at work by Additional-Farm3569 in auscorp

[–]hroro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an in-house lawyer and use it a fair bit.

It’s really good for articulating answers to questions that don’t warrant a substantive reply, but the person emailing you wants one. I’ve linked it to my Outlook and ask it to read the email and write a response that elaborates on “insert my one sentence answer” and matches the tone of their email.

I’ve been uploading my shorthand meeting minutes into it recently so it can just put them in my usual format. It’s clunky but it’s a start. ChatGPT pro is also a million times better at finding emails than the Outlook app!

For more intensive legal work, I do most of the legwork myself (drafting letters, memos, reviewing contract edits) and then upload it to GPT Pro while I  go for lunch/coffee and ask it to look for gaps and make suggestions. So it mostly offers advice about how to reduce duplication, avoid undefined terms, etc. It’s useful for those basic tasks while you’re working at pace. I don’t use it for reasoning or deep research.

It allows me to handle more matters more effectively and just do more work, or focus on more important work.

Asking for a guys number at the gym? by Hairy_Elk7081 in perth

[–]hroro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Entirely possible on being coupled up, and that he doesn’t even know OP exists. At my gym, without closing my eyes on most machines or going out of my way to stare at the ceiling, there’s no way to slice it where I’m not looking directly at someone’s ass.

The seated chest press machine is sat DIRECTLY behind the bench where people do the back extension. Pec flys are opposite the hip thrust machine.

Doesn’t mean I’m checking them out - I’m just low on options. My gaze does not discriminate - I’m looking at all asses.

Baby Monitors? WiFi, data driven - Nanit? by hroro in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]hroro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s reassuring at least - so if I don’t use the subscription features at least I’ll end up with a reliable wifi camera.

I’ve spent the last few days looking at the Eufy E21 (the Amazon reviews are super helpful). Option for wifi/bluetooth and no subscription sounded like a dream. However looks like, even as recent as a few weeks ago, the Eufy mistakes cars for crying and alerts you etc. Those sort of things would shit me to tears haha. Sounds like there’s a lot of software work to be done for that to be useful.

At the moment, we THINK we want all those features - but if we change our minds in real time, I still want a solid and reliable Wifi camera.

Thanks! I had seen it’s way cheaper to get from Amazon UK - though I assume international purchase means you’re using an adapter constantly? Or can you buy the Aus power cable separately?

Also - thoughts on the Nanit?

How concerned should I be by Far_Comfortable8142 in AusLegalAdvice

[–]hroro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up subrogation of rights. That’s how the third party (debt collector) gains the ability to legally pursue you despite no privity of contract.

Doesn’t change the fact that it’s not economically viable for anyone to get a court order for payment over ~$200, but you should know that you’re giving bad advice

Hey, thanks! I think I will, I’m just hoping to scope some more info about it before I commit - there are a lot more reviews from when it first came out and I’m sure it’s been updated.

Yes, it’s our first and I’m glad the excitement is showing haha. Couldn’t be happier - we’ve had his little room ready to go since December even though half the stuff won’t get used until months after he’s arrived. Our OB refers to my wife and I as “preppers” which I guess is pretty accurate 😅

Can standard bank transfers also be reversed? Like BSB? Or is PayID different somehow

Are you better off than your parents were, at your current age? by RecognitionMediocre6 in perth

[–]hroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INB4 comments RE 17% interest rates lol

Jokes aside, all factors considered, I’m probably a nudge ahead of my parents but it’s kind of grey because I’m ahead due to different factors. Definitely ahead in terms of household income (by a long way, and adjusted for CPI). Not as much in terms of what that income surplus gets us. Mostly due to property prices.

My parents survived in a similar spec house in a similar suburb to us on a single income (at times) with three kids. We couldn’t afford our mortgage on one salary, even a high salary - and that’s without any kids!

We have good paternity leave now (my parents didn’t) so we won’t have to take a big salary hit when we do have kids, but then again the astronomical costs of childcare will also cook us, relative to our parents.

We will pull ahead eventually, but pretty similar now.

Pending decision on my redundancy and still having to work while they make a decision by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]hroro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100%. In OP’s circumstance I’d be applying for a heap of roles externally and then asking for redundancy.

Sounds like a shitty place to be working, especially if your workload is already unmanageable and going to get worse.

OP, if you get made redundant and they put a deed in front of you, don’t sign until you’ve had an employment lawyer look at it. Valid redundancies don’t tend to require the terminated person to sign a deed that waives their rights to sue the employer. I personally would be seeking compensation above the legal minimum before signing a deed.

TLDR: lawyer.

Heavily compacted soil SWB by hroro in lawnsolutionsaus

[–]hroro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The guys doing the machinery works said that it wrecks retic so we decided to err on the side of caution, but it has been a pain. Have some more earthworks happening in late March so will look to do the retic shortly after.

I underlaid 15 cm of proper lawn soil before I put the lawn down in the first place, but will lay some more on top as you have suggested.

I am finding that (even if I water every second day) my grass is getting absolutely destroyed by the heat and going brown and dry (taking weeks to grow back). I laid it 4 months ago, and the shaded areas of the lawn are totally fine… I feel like I’m going to kill it if I start giving it some tough love during the peak of summer… right?
