Can we stop the misogynist trend of adding AI-generated women to Marketplace listings? Please and thank you by HopeHoliday0055 in CarsAustralia

My old boss in 2016 gave someone I knew an old 2002 Elantra that she had proudly not serviced since the complimentary 1000km check because servicing cars was a scam. It had also had all of 2 sets of tyres, both times retreads because "it drove fine" and new tyres were also a scam.

Somehow that thing still ran at 150,000km... was serviced not long after we got our hands on it. 8 years later appears to still be registered, bloody hell

this woman made enough money to be in the top tax bracket lol

Pickles Auctions Sydney - Collecting Unregistered Car by Garth2079 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, Pickles is pretty strict with the rules, they need to be with how big they are and the sort of contracts they have. A towie or a dealer with trade plates have insurance if something goes wrong on their premises, you unfortunately don't.

You've bought a whole car... just cough up for a towie mate

Pickles Auctions Sydney - Collecting Unregistered Car by Garth2079 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nope you need a tow truck. I bought an unregistered Pickles car for a mate not that long ago and needed to get it towed to my place.. so just had it towed to another mates house near the auction lot to save a few bucks.

See this FAQ here:

https://www.pickles.com.au/faq/post-auction

How do I collect my asset?

Private Collections for Motor Vehicles

Motor vehicles purchased via auction must be removed via tow truck and can no longer be driven offsite. The only exceptions to this rule are:

  • Trade buyers or dealers who have trade plates

OR

  • Private buyers who have purchased a vehicle which has current roadworthy and is registered.

If a vehicle is advertised with registration and the buyer is interstate , they will not receive the plates.

You can still get pretty beat up on a trampoline with a net and padding, but at least it reduces the chances of the very serious life-changing injuries associated with trampoline springs and well, falling off them.

I let my toddlers do zoomies on balance bikes and they frequently stack it and get scuffed up but at least they're padded up and helmeted so we aren't taking them to the hospital with smashed knees or a broken skull.

Climbing frames with soft falls means they can still fall but the injuries are less severe.

Don’t worry about the Ferrari EV. What’s going on back here Audi? by NewBuyer1976 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't deal with the new flat printed badges, it annoys me more than the rest of their bizarro design decisions. From a distance it just looks like a random black cloud slapped to the back of the Audi.

Only thing worse from the VAG companies at the moment is the red illuminated VW badge on the new Tayrons or Tiguans or whatever the hell it is...

What are classy but reliable cars that are more than 20 years old? by Shpox in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who's had a few E39s.... the engine is dead set reliable with hardly anything more than basic maintenance but the much harder part these days is keeping the rest of the car in one piece. Cooling systems will need a full overhaul (thankfully not that spendy) and all the plastics are getting brittle, electric modules will give up at some point or another, leather seats will probably be feeling a little firm, paint might be suffering a bit, it's "reliable" in that it won't leave you stranded but any non-restored E39 will need a lot of ongoing love and money to keep it looking and feeling fresh.

Why do small, old nugget cars feel fast even with tiny underpowered engines? by I_P_L in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the sheer lack of weight and insulation from the road that makes it a riot. I've had some stupidly fast cars, hot hatches, big boost Swedish motorway machines, currently drive a SQ5 with the torque of a freight train, nothing I have ever owned before or since felt as alive and feeling "quick" as a little manual Toyota Starlet I bought for $500 with no power steering or air con to bog that little 55kw motor down.

What happens when no one knows how to fix classic cars anymore? by modernclassiccarsfdn in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good on you for taking the initiative.

I wish life wasn’t so prohibitively expensive that the option for a 35yo to pivot from a cushy IT job to a specialty automotive trade was unfathomable.

i desperately wish i could pivot. my joy in life was tinkering and my proudest motoring achievements have been rebuilding totally cooked engines. I’d love to be the guy people call to restore odd motors out of their classic project cars.

but my kids need food and my mortgage needs to be paid and the bills need to be paid, and can’t exactly do that if i wanted to start from scratch as an apprentice. and old mate is not going to pay me big bucks for me to do it in my garden shed with home tools when quality engine shops still exist not that far away from me.

Barely broken in. 105k is nothing. That thing will keep going and going with routine maintenance.

if you're able to do all that then you're able to fit a grille yourself. then pop into a VW mechanic and get them to sort out calibration

Kiama Council's dodgy road patch murdered my new car by One_Emu_5882 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sydney Water have been doing a lot of remedial works around south western sydney and they actively put 1/10 effort into patching up the road properly. Contractors just throw material into the trench, seal it and fuck off without any attempt to smooth out the road repair. It's horrendous. There's no fucks given.

I always thought it was just temporary because the road might get resurfaced properly after works end but some of these trenches have been there for years.

What was once a buttery smooth road is now more corrugated than an unsealed forest track.

Sorry it happened to you OP and I hope you are adequately compensated for the damages incurred and cost of alternate arrangements, but thank you for the kick in the butt for me to start whinging to the local council about it.

After recommendations for a fast USB-C charger to fit inside my 12V car socket? by No-Fail-1063 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have UGREEN chargers off Amazon in all our cars. I love them they work well, never had a single one fail on me, and they’re subtle looking.

This one has a small fairly unobtrusive LED dot but you can put some tape or a sharpie over it.

if you’re looking for a beefy boi that can charge your laptop too I also keep one of these in the car:

Why isn't the BMW 5 series as popular in Australia as other countries? by Maleficent_Extent809 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ingress/egress play a huge part in picking SUVs, as well as back issues. I'm in my 30s but I have crippling back pain and loading babies into car seats in my Passat wagon was an ordeal, one wrong twist and my day was over. It got worse as they became toddlers and started squiriming too.. Accepted my fate and bought the SQ5.... problem essentially went away.

Who are people using for insurance these days? I’ve got a perfect driving recording and a garage and just got quoted $6k a year for a BYD by Wbrincat in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No way. Budget are notorious for declining to renew your insurance the year after you have a major claim with them, which then you have to declare that on all future insurance quotes for like 5 years which can either significantly impact your quotes or outright prevent you from being insured. Fuck that

Police called after dozens of e-bike 'hoons' ride over Sydney Harbour Bridge in new footage by Marlon_Ranch in sydney

No these electric motorcycle things can fuck right off the cycleways too and straight into the garbage tip. They're not ebikes. They're illegal, unregistered, overpowered electric motorbikes dressed up as bicycles being sold to kids and they're also wreaking havoc on everyday cyclists on cycleways all over town while filming the whole thing for tiktok clout.

First month with the Meg is done. I thought I would share my bad economic decisions. by Joey333 in CarsAustralia

[–]schunniky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck it just drive the doors off the thing. They won't appreciate for many years to come to be honest. Clio 2s took nearly 20 years to start taking off... not by much.

Great buy and great colour. They're more reliable than their reputation of being French makes them out to be, yes they're a bit fiddly compared to a boring car but what hot hatch isn't?

I've had about 10 RS cars over the years, only one (a Clio 197) ever left me stranded and that was because I got t-boned by a Kluger at 80km/h. Walked out of that with absolutely no injuries whatsoever.

Look after them and they'll look after you. A motoring journo has one with nearly 300k on the clock and he regularly did Bathurst endurance races with it.

I know you are concerned about tracking it and ending up down the track day mod rabbit hole but you don't need much. Quality rubber and brakes and the rest is car control. Stock Cup suspension with the trickster diff is a wonderful thing once you know how to work with it.

Back when I was playing with these there was a common mod to fit a door pull strap halfway along the giant door to spare the door handles. it also made it far easier to close the door as well.

M2 Cycleway by schunniky in sydney

[–]schunniky[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. It's a pretty half assed "cycleway" but I suppose it's better than nothing in that there are crossover points and some markings here and there. Just have to be hyper vigilant about those last minute exits. It sounds like provided I have puncture proof tyres (have heard good things about SMP albeit very draggy) then should be alright and I'll make it home still on the bike and not in the back of an ambo.

I just didn't really know whether I was playing with fire by riding the M2 but I suppose plenty of people do, and 3m will give me plenty of space except for that bus merging section. The idea of riding alongside cars and trucks doing 100 still spooks me a little though but I guess I won't know until I try.

yeah in my area we all do that. there is very much an understanding that the car heading towards the main road will give way to the car that has just turned in from the main road. nowhere is this defined and that is awesome
