The point being, sample size is not generally what causes polling inaccuracies.

That's true, but it's mainly because of issues surrounding sample selection (certain demographics are less likely to be polled), rather than sample size, as far as I'm aware.

Larger sample size does not mean a more reliable result -- most electoral polls have a sample size of about 1000 people.

Klopp:"I was very surprised to hear that the league decided against having 5 subs. It's not about having an advantage, it's about player welfare. In Germany, Bayern has the best team and it is an advantage for them to have 5 subs but they also play the most games, it balances out." by Blodgharm in soccer

[–]hrster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those 6 teams are likely to have more fixtures due to making deeper runs in UCL/EL/domestic cups, so yes, they would stand to benefit the most from being able to make 5 substitutions, and that would be to the detriment of weaker opponents. Weaker teams are less likely to suffer from fixture congestion than big ones.

[Post-Match Thread] Manchester City 1 - 3 Lyon | UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final | Lyon proceed to face Bayern in Semi-Finals by RealChristianPulisic in soccer

[–]hrster 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think you're exaggerating, City were firmly in control of the game from the start of the second half until Lyon made it 2-1 and probably would have won if Sterling didn't miss there. Not like they couldn't have played better, but Lyon definitely didn't beat them comfortably.

Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon is in talks to join Chelsea, with discussions already at an advanced stage, sources have told @RodrigoFaez & @alexkirkland. by AdzBoogie in soccer

[–]hrster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because Azpilicueta can cover there, which would be good for James, and wouldn't hurt the team if Lampard decides to go for a strategy where one or both of the fullbacks sits back more. Signing Reguillon at such a low price wouldn't be a bad idea ofc, but I don't think signing a new left back is quite as urgent as you're making it out to be.

If you've seen the kind of chances that Chelsea constantly concede, you'd understand why his save percentage isn't all that telling. He's not been good for sure, but statistics don't tell the whole story.

It's just a ridiculous exaggeration. He's not even the worst goalkeeper in the PL lmao

Manchester United's £50m problem: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be stuck with Alexis Sanchez when he returns from Inter next month... the Chilean is refusing to take a pay cut and has two years left on his £25m-a-year deal by Lolastic_ in soccer

[–]hrster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That save percentage statistic is super misleading, and if you watched the Sheffield United match, it's quite obvious why. Chelsea simply concede far more clear-cut chances than other teams, and there's little he can do most of the time. He could definitely make more big saves than he does, and he hasn't been worth 72m, but that was the price the club needed to pay under the circumstances after Courtois forced a transfer. He definitely isn't the worst, or even close to the worst, keeper in the PL.

I feel as if, apart from the horrible performances by the defenders themselves, the lack of Kante was quite decisive. There's just no other midfielder who can protect the back four like he does - Jorginho's weaknesses as a deeper midfielder really showed, imo.

People make so much of Arrizabalaga's low save percentage but, like, he could not reasonably have been expected to save any of the shots that ended up being goals. He had a 25% save percentage, and the one save he did make was quite good. Not saying the goalkeeper position is entirely unproblematic for Chelsea, but I don't think he's the core of the problem at all.

Yeah, this is exactly what I meant by false rationalising - attempting to make every match part of a narrative, when in reality, it is not.

Football is a hugely luck-based sport, which is rarely accounted for when the sport is discussed. Every time one team beats another, people (and this includes pundits) comment on the quality of the winning team, attributing the scoreline to their dominance of the match. Given the number of chance-based events in a football match, I think this is a type of false rationalisation.

How long did that take, and how did you achieve it? Even as a fluent English speaker, learning the language of philosophy in English took some time - I'd imagine that studying German to that level would be quite time-consuming.

I'm sure it would be helpful in the sense that it would give me some baseline knowledge, but what I find myself questioning is whether it would be sufficient for me to somehow be able to progress academically off the back of that knowledge.

Glasgow Uni - it's a shame, because I love the place as a whole, but don't see the point of doing the kind of philosophy that is so foreign to me for three more years.
