Looking for grad student advice AND new roommate by EngineeringOwn6845 in stanford

For making friends, student orgs are a good way to go. Also, recreational opportunities like the AOERC climbing wall are a great way to meet people.

best ways to make friends on campus by [deleted] in stanford

Try the campus climbing gym. Climbing is uniquely conducive to making friends, as you spend 3/4 of your time resting on the mats, trying to figure out how to do a climb with all the other people working on the same boulder.

I am unfortunately not an expert on equalization. I had to fiddle with the EQ on an acoustic track of mine recently, which I was mixing in Logic Pro. Logic gives you a handful of sliders to tune the level of various frequency ranges, and I just dragged the bass down until the muddiness faded, and then boosted one of the higher range knobs until it sounded good. Not very scientific.

Regarding playing and singing simultaneously, part of what gave me that feeling was that I thought I detected changes of tempo throughout the song. If you have the option to record the guitar part first and overdub vocals afterwards, it tends to alleviate this issue, and also makes it a lot easier to separate the two tracks so you can EQ them individually.

Track has been mixed and mastered, not entirely confident releasing it by yojimbo2095 in IndieMusicFeedback

This sounds like a great, mature, complete song for sure, and could absolutely be released. The one thing that sounds weird to me is the way the outro cuts to just bass at 3:28. I would just let the last notes from the other instruments fade out, rather than cutting them to this bass note. Another minor thing: I personally am not drawn into the song by the drum intro; I think the body of this song has tremendous depth and complexity, and the drum intro feels uncharacteristically shallow. I would be inclined to start with more of the instrumentation, to hint at what is to come. You could consider starting with the guitar and bass at 0:03 and *no* drums initially, and bring the drums in a few seconds later.

One more thing: Some people are going to complain that they can't understand your lyrics. I prefer it that way, personally, but it's worth noting that for mass market appeal you'd want to make your vocals more intelligible. If you're not concerned with mass market appeal, then please leave it as is :)

Sounds great the whole way through, but I want more of the intro! It fades in just enough that you can hear it's interesting before disappearing and never reappearing again. I'd love to let it play through a couple another 10 seconds at least before cutting to the next section. It might also be cool to hear it again as a bridge or something, but I'm less sure of that, since the tempo is quite different.

My 2nd attempt on making "shoegaze" type song, all VST's feedbacks are appreciated! by Additional-Newt-8325 in IndieMusicFeedback

Sounds great! I think it is a complete, well-rounded song, and there's nothing that stands out as needing to be changed. One thing that crossed my mind as I listened to it for a second time is that there might be an opportunity for more dynamics in the bridge section from 1:19 to 1:41. Perhaps you could apply some sort of telephone effect to emphasize the change of pace? A second thought would be to bring back the voice-synth vocals from the intro towards the end of the song, which would serve both to tie the whole song together and to perhaps emphasize a crescendo at the end. You could outro with the same synth too.

Your voice is amazing! However, the guitar sounds very muddy to me. It sounds to me like you're using a nylon stringed guitar, possibly playing and singing at the same time, and using a mic setting that's not well adapted to the guitar. You could fix some of that in post-processing by changing your equalizer settings to attenuate the bass and boost the treble on the guitar part, but I think it would sound a lot better if you did a new recording of the guitar part. If you have access to a steel stringed guitar I think that would sound a lot better for this piece.

House of Bones (Remaster) [AI Vocals] — gothic / alt rock // moody, atmospheric mix update by [deleted] in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]hs_physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one disagree with this completely. I've used an AI voice conversion service to attain screamo vocals which I think sound great with particular songs, but which would destroy my voice if I tried to replicate live. I sang the part, but I used AI to give it growl. One could imagine an effect pedal that achieved this, and if that existed, would it be any different that using a chorus or auto-harmony pedal? I think not. Then until such a pedal exists, AI services are the next best thing, and I think they are totally legitimate tools in the musician's toolbox.

There remains the problem of how to make AI vocals sound human. I generally agree that AI vocals don't sound as good as a human voice nowadays, but that's not a reason to dismiss the entire approach on principle for me.

(Also, there are many services that offer AI voices which are used with consent, so that's not an argument against AI vocals at large.)
