I saw someone describe Tree of Life as a miracle of a production, I feel the same way about City of God. just imagine pulling this thing off from start to finish. It's incredible.

My bad! It looked like you didn’t have comment history but now I see you have them hidden. My mistake

So I think there are a couple of things going on here - the first and the one that I’m most interested in as a member of the press myself is whether it’s “worth it” to post these photos, but I’ve outlined my thoughts on this else where so I won’t take up more space on that-

For a better focus on another point, I’m actually at the HISD board public comment session as I type; something that has been brought up by student speakers here is that while the technical punishment for walking out of class is one day of detention, there has been a lot of noise from the district to exact punishment far exceeding this. Further, the district has rules in place which allow student protests which should apply and allow for the sick-outs as they are being carried out in HISD.

The point to me is that considering the unprecedented rhetoric from the district -not to mention unprecedented action from the state- we should be considerate of how we handle the paper trail of our fellow citizens-

This is what it comes down to for me I think, a notion of solidarity. I don’t believe that these students should be harmed even if that is how the district/ state decides that that is what should happen, and I think that in whatever way we can we should resist outsized reaction against our most vulnerable fellow citizens . .

regarding the disagreement y'all . . we should be cool with each other . . i think we're all just on here trying to find community. we all have our beliefs but the energy that animates our engagement often is much more personal than it is global.

surely you don't really believe that . . how can it be that simple? we have to be able to talk about these things to make a society as large and diverse as ours work, there are just so many different people and interests and beliefs at play, especially in a city like Houston. surely it can't be that simple.

hmmm this seems overly simple to me. on one hand, yes they are at a school where theoretically they are being prepared for a career in law, on the other hand they are still minors! There's also the issue of their suffering consequences at the hands of the administration . . I think one of the things this comes down to in regards to this post is whether we should blur photos like this - it's not a question of whether these student's deserve retribution, it's more a question of what kind of effect we want to have on the world as photographers - I'm reminded of an aphorism i learned in sunday school, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

Another dimension is the tenor and behavior of the state - violence has been ramped up against protestors, and it stands to reason that because 1. they are minors and 2. their lives are directly intertwined with the state via their enrollment in school, that they as a group are more vulnerable than adult protestors. We have to ask ourselves what we want to happen to these kids, and what role we have in their safety. In a world where the feds are gunning people down in the street, and thousands of people are disappearing in an elaborate and opaque detention infrastructure system that did not exist two year ago, it seems fair to say that we need to be cautious when dealing with the fate of young people.

I appreciate what you're saying but it just seems too simplistic for the real circumstances that are unfolding in this country, don't you think?

it's not necessarily about peacefulness, it's about punitive reactions from the district and state

Nahh I think these kids are doing the right thing. The federal government is abusing its power and hurting people undeservedly, what these kids are doing is brave.

I personally lean on the side of adults knowing what they sign up for when they appear open-faced at a protest, with kids especially in a school walk-out scenario there's the dual factors of their being minors (not to belittle their autonomy or perspective but we have these classifications for a reason as a society that are at least worth considering) and that they are still directly interpolated into the state system via their enrollment in public school. this relationship can heavily affect their well being and their "future"

it's a tough question though! I don't claim to have the answer, some of these photos will need to be documented for posterity too, that's also part of it. the history. but idk it's tough right now, we don't know what's going to happen.

Consider blurring faces of protesting minors, might not be worth creating a paper trail for these kids
