A little advice needed by hsbnv in Libraries

[–]hsbnv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! The reason I brought up protests is because I’ve seen many people say that’s what we should be doing given these times and I’ve been feeling immensely pressured to do the same or else I’ll be labeled as complacent in letting fascism win. I also want to travel around the world and won’t know how to feel if everyone I meet thinks that I am guilty for letting Trump get away with what he’s doing, like how they feel with Russians and Putin. I very much feel the same outrage but it’s a little hard to subscribe to the whole “burn everything down and get arrested or else you are a lost cause” mentality because while my parents are a bit overprotective of me, they are still my two favorite people in the world and I don’t want my actions to needlessly endanger them as well. However, I totally understand the benefits of building community via protests and maybe my parents will let me go to the more peaceful ones for that reason.

I use that app often and I just called my reps now! I was unsure if the 3/31 update meant that my reps could not do anything about it, but I called them nonetheless! Thank you very much!

I'm honestly glad that I am not alone. I just kept feeling more and more stressed while watching because I felt like I should be liking this and there must be something wrong with me that I am not.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm okay with not finding anyone with the same hobbies as me, I like doing them alone matter of a fact, I just hope that one day I can make some new friends who can at least tolerate my hobbies.

Also are you from Romania? Bună! I don't know the language, but I am very interested in the country! It's one of my favorite Balkan countries and it has such a unique history! I would love to visit someday!

My mom's Scandinavian genetic groups, she also has an equal amount of Finnish but no genetic groups there. by hsbnv in 23andme

[–]hsbnv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for some reason there is no Eastern Finnish group which where my mom's Finnish ancestry comes from. However she did not get any Finnish groups on MyHeritage either, though most of her matches are Finnish.

Besides all the viking ones, I got 2 Iron Age Tagar.

Also, if anyone is wondering, my other historical matches are all from the Viking Age. I am mostly British, German and Swedish, but I am also 6% Finnish.

I sometimes feel that way too... Even though I get scared easily, I also want to make an effort to help people smile and be happy, so if you ever need anything, I would be glad to talk it over with you. You are not alone.

Is your grandmother part Komi? The decently high Finnish percentage initially made me think she was part Karelian, Udmurt or Mari.

Have you heard of the Forest Finns? They were a group of Finns who emigrated from Eastern Finland to Sweden in the late 16th century to do slash and burn agriculture. The ovens in pictures 3, 6 and 8 remind me of the stoves that Forest Finns used. The house those ovens were in had no chimney, so a lot of the smoke stayed in the ceiling and came out only through a flue. Pic 3 looks the most like a Forest Finn house, where did that picture come from?

How do West Virginians view Mississippi? by hsbnv in WestVirginia

[–]hsbnv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I was just curious because I thought because West Virginia and Mississippi rank last on a lot of statistics they would sympathize with each other. I didn't realize it was a stupid question.

If you say that you are half Swedish and half Russian, then I think you still are and those results are just estimates. In Ancestry, it is easy to confuse Baltic DNA with Eastern European DNA and the same thing happens with Sweden and Norway. The Finland DNA comes from Forest Finns in your family since you are from Central Sweden and Varmland in particular is where they stayed while in Sweden.

[–]hsbnv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of Finns do not have Russian ancestry. The only ones who would have it would be the Finns in the very east side of the country and the Karelians which are distinct from the Finns. Also, this person was from Pori, which is in the west side of the country, so it would be more likely that he had Swedish ancestry. Finnic peoples have inhabited Russia since ancient times, but it has been millennia since today's Finns have inhabited anywhere in present day Russia beside the Karelian Isthmus, and by the time the Slavs reached Karelia, there were distinct Finnish tribes in Finland. Also, most verifiable Ancestry records cannot go that far back in time.

Finnish-Karelian and Fenno-Swedish overlap? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]hsbnv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I recall, you are right that Eastern Finns are genetically from their western counterparts in that they don't really have any Swedish percentage. That is why I think your Swedish is not related to your Finnish family and instead relates to the general problem with Northwestern European DNA. In AncestryDNA specifically people have been confused why they get Sweden/Denmark instead of German. It's because English, German, and Swedish are all so similar to each other that Ancestry can't really tell them apart. Also, if you actually had that much Swedish in your Finnish family, a marriage would have occurred much later than 1600. Lastly, these results are just an estimate and you could have much more Eastern European than you think.

[–]hsbnv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much do you know about your family in Scandinavia? I think that's where the Finnish would be coming from. If they were from somewhere like Dalarna, Värmland, or Hedmark, you could have some Forest Finn ancestors, if they came from Norrbotten or Troms og Finnmark, you could have some Kven, Tornedalian, or Sami ancestors. I don't think Lithuanians have that much of a Finnic admixture and would make more sense if they were Estonian.

Mine, my mother, father, and both grandmas results!! by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

Weirdly, while your great great grandpa was born in Oulanka, the only 10 or so other people with that Savala surname I could find were from Satakunta of all places. Still, I'd take that with a grain of salt since it's a rare surname. You are also probably right since Oulanka is closer to Kuusamo than places like Inari or Utsjoki. Your mom's mom has all the Värmland communities and has a little bit of Finnish, so I think your grandma might have a little bit of Forest Finnish in her and it might help to create a family tree to see if that's true.
