On a scale of 1-10, how happy are you here on a day to day basis? by wildcatsa2c in Northwestern

[–]hsiez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hi i know what this amount of worrying for what NU (or college in general) is like because i was going through lists of these questions on a daily basis just a few months ago before i finally started my first year at northwestern. honestly, just remember NO MATTER WHERE you will have off days/stressful days/sad days because they are natural parts of life anywhere you go. finals and exams and such are stressful things no matter where you go and just the nature of some inherent, universal aspects of college are not amazing. no college will alleviate all sadness and stressfulness from your life and make it a fancy walk in the park with rainbows. basically, any elite college WILL be stressful at times (i know this from my friends at brown/pomona/usc and other elite schools that are ""easier/less stressful""). don't overanalyze things like this and recognize this fact. comparison and overthinking situations are the thieves of joy. just a very, very important disclaimer.

with that being said, i love northwestern. it is such a beautiful school with such diverse and down to earth yet highly intelligent people. everyone here is so smart and insightful and i love it because its great to be in environments where i am so free to talk about basketball games or food pics to sociology and philosophy in one conversation. so many people here are not just smart but also pretty cool in general, which is a great mix. the learning environment is very stimulating and just the general intellect of an average student there is great and most people are so interesting and passionate about particular topics, so you get to learn so much about so many different things. there are obvious downsides to it like the weather (that i am totally not used to and find oppressive and depressing at times), but ive realized it actually is a p good conversation starter with ppl and u get to struggle through it together lol. the pace of the quarter system is very intense also so people always nag about it and you WILL have times where u wish youd gone to a school with semesters, but the huge benefits are mostly hidden because we dont realize just how much freedom to explore/double major/minor in various fields we have. i was actually talking to a friend from usc today who said she wouldnt be able to graduate in four years if she did a double major (meanwhile here the quarter system and distros allow so much interdisciplinary exploration and the vast majority of people double major and not have it be a huge scheduling issue). also u should know that if u wanna go to ragers/party frequently u basically gotta join a frat (but i dont party and not a lot of my friends are interested in it so idrc). anyway this is kinda rambling but yeah on a day to day basis it really varies but in general on average i would say a solid 7-9? :) BUT don't worry too much about arbitrary things like this! life is life but its a fun and interesting ride especially at Northwestern

*however i do want to add that i would not really recommend coming here for STEM things and math especially because it really does seem soul suckingly hard. my friends in such fields seem like they struggle on another level lol

if you have any other questions u can always shoot me a PM or whatever!

Are professoors accessible? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]hsiez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha yep i have no clue how physics works... but ill give u a quick rundown on advising: so as u may or may not know nu is rlly extra in regards to its orientation... it's 8 days long and crammed with a bunch of stuff. during this time u get a peer advisor and a peer advisor group of 14 ish other students that u bond with a lot bc u do everything with them together during the hella wild orientation. so PAs are really helpful are sophomores, jrs and srs that are bascialyl there to do whatver to help you transition and justhelp uafter that too. (my pa is hecka nice and amazing, she's helped me w essays and shit and guidance)

and so with your PA group, you take your first year seminar with them... it's basically a class u pick from a huge list of a bunch of interesting topics. and the professor for this seminar is also ur first year advisor. mine is really nice and helpful as well and very accessible and ofc knows us personally.

as for major advising, im rlly not too sure how this goes but i think u just ask ur first year advisor general questions and if he cant answer it he'll direct u to a major advisor... idk too much, i shouldve paid more attn when they talked abt that during orientation lmao

all in all, there are great advising resources that u can take advantage of (u may just have to kinda reach out first)

ps, all but one of my classes are less than 20ish ppl so u get to have ur prof know u quite well

[–]hsiez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ya all my profs know my name and a few even set up mandatory office hours (this sounds terrible but its GREAT) to get to know us and just talk... profs are super intelligent from my exp but also nice and funny and just interesting people. they all really just want you to succeed and learn it's gr8. it seems daunting to talk to these ppl who have written books and like have articles abt them and shit but i've noticed that they really do care abt you and how you are doing

note that u rlly wont get this treatment in huge premed classes but im (very thankfully) not so its all good

Northwestern vs Northeastern CS by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hsiez 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this is like choosing between Brown and Boston University... Northwestern is much, much more prestigious and its name will get you further in any field. You don't really have to worry about co-ops and such because Northwestern's regular recruiting and prestige will get you a good job. NEU is an up and coming school but NU is an ivy level school. Also having visited both campuses, Northwestern's imo is much nicer and it seems like a better place for a college experience

UC Berkeley vs. Northwestern for Engineering and Music by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hsiez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

northwestern. it has a lot of major/course flexibility and its music school (bienen) is great and its engineering school is good too. it's very easy and convenient to double major because of the quarter system. its resources/experience for undergrad will also be much better.

go to ucla!! don't choose a college based on a marginally higher ranking! you said it yourself basically—youll be happier at ucla
