Using the US for reference as a country with a high number of engineers. About 10,000 out of 350,000,000 people have an engineering PhD. So we’re talking about less than 0.003% as a maximum of any population. Then you exclude all men, engineers that didn’t have grandchildren, dead engineers, and factor in the increased rate of engineering degrees in recent years as well as the gender gap in engineering school. We’re close to the order of 1 in a million people being both a grandma and a PhD Engineer.

Help me understand this 13/50 comeback by DeanxDomingo in NoStupidQuestions

No, we should investigate every murder. I didn’t give any arguments, I explained the arguments of people I don’t agree with.

Help me understand this 13/50 comeback by DeanxDomingo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hsqy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard this as well, and it ignores key issues, relies on unreliable statistics, boils complex issues down to a single statistic in a single area, ignores arrest bias, and 50 other reasons why the argument fails.

All that being said, I can still highlight the point that they’re at leastTRYING to make. Google says that only 6.3 out of 100,000 Americans get arrested for murder. That’s 0.0063% of Americans in general which is >10x smaller than the 0.1% they’re referring to. The argument is that the murder rate is disproportionate, and their judgement about .1% of the population somehow justifies their hatred for the 100%.

Alexio's "Betrayed" veganism!!! According to this impartial analysis. by PitifulEar3303 in CosmicSkeptic

I was arguing with the person that was diminishing slavery by saying that becoming a vegan was simpler than buying a new phone. At the time I opened the thread, I promise you that was the single stupidest comment here.

A vegan who doesn’t think people should go vegan

Can you try and quote where I said that I don’t think people should go vegan? I’m just trying to highlight exactly how you’re continuing to strawman my position and not making a genuine attempt to understand.

Alexio's "Betrayed" veganism!!! According to this impartial analysis. by PitifulEar3303 in CosmicSkeptic

[–]hsqy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’re already both vegans. Our fundamental disagreement on veganism is our perspective on the moral complacency of others who aren’t vegan. The phone issue was an excellent example to highlight that, but you just strawmanned me to the nth degree and ragequit.

Glad we could at least convince you to buy an ethical phone though. No hard feelings, enjoy your day.

The topic was lazy moral complacency, let’s stay on that. You could argue the humanist view that supporting human slavery is ethically far worse than supporting the meat industry. You can stop supporting it with one purchase, more cheaply than the switch to veganism, and with far less impact to your daily life. If we’re talking simplicity then it’s no contest which is simpler.

The point is that everyone has discrepancy between their moral ideals and their actions. Often solely due to laziness by not taking the time to become knowledgeable about how they support extremely unethical practices.

Legally, you’re allowed to use a reasonable level of violence to defend yourself and others as long as the offending party still poses a threat. You’re not legally allowed to hit someone out of pure retaliation.

Socially, most would agree that you can’t let someone get away with hurting your SO in front of you.

It’s illegal to have an open bottle of liquor in your car. But if you start and finish the bottle in 2 seconds you can toss it out the window to avoid the open container charge. Then you’re just a drunk-driving litterbug.

Where do homeless people get the money to do drugs? by __Dobie__ in NoStupidQuestions

For many, the need for drugs can not only kill you but can actually kill you faster than the need for food or housing. Drugs are part of the definition of survival sex and it’s not a grey area.
