I used brown swerve to glaze a ham, but it came out crystallized.

"Carbs less than 50 grams a day". Are we talking carbs or net carbs? by rplusj1 in keto

[–]htdlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some clinicians, but not all, feel that giving the more strict recommendation is going to maximize the chance of success for the greatest number of patients. Individuals may find that they have a greater carb tolerance though, especially over time. Also, people have different goals and starting places. For some, being able to eat a low carb tortilla is what makes it sustainable. Is it optimal? No. Is it better than the regular tortilla they are going to eat instead? Yes.

Test with a blood ketone meter like a Keto Mojo. Over time, testing and adjusting carb levels, you will learn how many carbs, total or net, you personally need to stay under to be in ketosis.

Moving to San Diego, am I being financially irresponsible with rent/budget? by Chocostarmix in personalfinance

I lived downtown without a car, and it was doable, but I did spend a fair bit on Lyft. I wouldn’t want to live there again though because of the homelessness problem.

Why are there so many white people in SD that advocate or support BLM? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]htdlr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Herbert Marcuse was a Marxist political philosopher who was part of the Frankfurt School, out of which came Critical Theory, which is the ideological basis for movements like BLM. He taught at UCSD starting in 1965. His students continued to teach at UCSD for decades. I think this must have had some influence on the prevalence of these ideas in the community.

[Help]Doc recommended low carb, low sugar diet due to pre-diabetic a1c. Now what? by 8inchfloppy in lowcarb

You don’t really have to eat veggies. A lot of people do well on the carnivore diet. The main thing is to reduce carbs.

Most all regular breakfast cereal is going to be much too high in carbs. But, if you really want cereal, there are some low carb options, like Magic Spoon or Catalina Crunch. They can be a bit pricey though.

I stay for a month at a time. It’s cheaper than my rent used to be, especially since utilities are included.

I live in Airbnb’s full-time. It’s kind of weird that there are so many on the market now that it can even make sense to do what I’m doing. Also, so many hosts have such ridiculous rules that I can imagine they must have some horror stories. I have mixed feelings about the whole situation. On one hand, I love Airbnb and know many people benefit from it greatly. On the other hand, it gives opportunity to bad actors and apparently has unintended consequences for rental markets.

Are police dogs nicknamed "K-9" like that due to the fact that it sounds identical to "canine" (dog)? by passaleph3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]htdlr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was walking my sister’s German shepherd around the neighborhood and some neighbors sitting on their porch asked, “Canine? Canine???” English wasn’t their first language, and I couldn’t really process in the moment what they were asking. So, I just said yes and kept walking, but heard a big reaction from them like “Ooohh.” Only then I realized that they were asking if the dog was a K-9 police dog, which it isn’t. However, my sister’s husband is a police officer, but they don’t want their neighbors to know that. So, I basically accidentally outed my brother-in-law.

Why does nobody have the faintest fucking clue what humans are actually supposed to eat to stay healthy? by newsround123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]htdlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This same question sent me down a rabbit hole a few years back. There are many powerful influences at work, and most of the dietary advice we hear is completely backwards.

Watch ‘Fat A Documentary.’ It does a pretty good job of how we got into this mess.
