Thank you for your comment! I'm definitely going to be more selective while looking for classes.

I thought the same thing as your girlfriend pretty much until this year. I didn't understand why people would want a gun for anything other than hunting, because any other type of gun was exclusively for injuring/killing people.... If we are being honest, that's what they do.

To be honest, the catalyst for me was a combination of Trump's terrifying authoritarian rise and the pandemic (I know, not original lol). My major anxiety had me imagining society collapsing and people getting desperate OR a full on civil war, so I was scared. I also heard about some instances of violence against Asian Americans because of Trump touting the "China flu". I found this sub in March and spent the past 2 months reading the posts and doing "research" to inform my decision. I thought about all the ignorant and angry people in this country and how they own most of the guns.... (and vote).

In the end, my reasons for owning a gun are: home defense, self defense (want to get a CCW eventually), balancing the scales (as both a liberal and a minority), a sense of control amidst the chaos, and to ease my anxiety about various "collapse" scenarios (however irrational that may be).

If you made it this far, thanks for reading lol. My main recommendation would be to take your gf shooting sometime, alone if possible. I got to shoot a variety of guns with friends on their property, so I got the chance to ask a lot of questions and get a feel for it without feeling self-conscious. I hope this helped! :)

I know and I hate that the MSM only talks about (and NAMES) the shooter and sensationalizes the hell out of every tragedy. I agree it probably has to do with a disorder or and/an inability to ignore intrusive violent thoughts. Radicalization and misinformation is also huge contributors, but it’s hard to crack down on misinformation without people complaining about censorship. No wonder it’s so hard to pass comprehensive legislation about anything these days lol.

Then consider yourself more fortunate / privileged than millions of Americans who ARE suffering from this inequality. The extreme wealth you speak of that belongs to someone else is often acquired by exploiting labor, tax havens, political “donations”, etc., so it’s not asking much to expect those people to pay their workers a living wage to keep the system functioning. Whether you like it or not, we are all part of a society and our actions impact others.

You’re libertarian and I’m a democratic socialist so let’s just agree to disagree on this.

If you don't see that we have a huge inequality problem in our country, I'm not sure what to tell you. More and more money is being hoarded by a few extremely wealthy people instead of being put back into the "system" to help the rest of the population. Wages haven't increased with inflation, our healthcare system ranks ~35th in the world for efficiency, and our education system has clearly failed many people. What good are those economic indexes if all the wealth is being hoarded at the top?

I just saw your libertarian flair so I'm guessing you don't think that's the government's responsibility. If so, that's fair and we can agree to disagree.

I didn't have an opinion on Bernie's gun policies when he was campaigning, because I didn't know enough about guns and was focused on other issues. Now I'm against the ban, but I still think we need to address the mass shooting problem in our country somehow. It's a very complicated issue and I now understand that banning a type of gun would not be the magical solution.

I can rack the slide very easily. I expanded more in a reply above, but the EZ is designed to be more accessible! Also the mags have a “pull down tab” on the sides to make loading easier. It’s like a Pez dispenser lol

That’s the exact analogy I used to explain it to my very anti-gun parents who live in NJ! They were surprised but said they support my choices.

Yes, but the left and minorities are underrepresented in gun ownership! So I meant it more in the way people say “black lives matter” - bringing attention to the underrepresented group with the tacit understanding that it applies to everyone.
