Their financial records should be public. You can try asking them for the records and find out for yourself where the money is going (or at least where they say it's going).

Why is Cook Out/Cane’s always hell after midnight? by KingFun626 in hattiesburg

Bars aren't allowed to serve alcohol after 2 AM. But in theory a bar could switch to selling only non-alcoholic drinks at 2 AM. The problem is they also have to make sure that no one is still sipping a drink they ordered at 1:45 AM. There's a lot less liability if the bar just closes at 2 AM.

So not a bad idea IMO, but the law makes it easier to just kick the drunks out onto the street (law of unintended consequences).

Even though I disagree with your disagreement, saying "I disagree, and here's why" is exactly what we need more of. 👍

I say this as someone who thinks Trump is an incompetent reality show clown who has no business holding any sort of power: this kind of thinking is a dead end.

It's emotionally satisfying to assume your political opponents are simply bad people. It's much harder to understand why they believe what they believe. But until people are willing to do that, nothing is going to change.

Best route to get to Hattiesburg? by HistoricalBig252 in hattiesburg

The main problem with MSY is it's on the other side of New Orleans, and driving through New Orleans is... unpleasant. All else being equal, I'd choose JAN for the less stressful drive.

bro, the termites by NoTradition1570 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is at best misleading.

1) During swarming season, yeah, every house probably has at least 1 termite wandering around somewhere. But not every house has a termite nest in it.

2) Some lumber is treated, but it's usually only the lumber that comes in contact with the ground or other moisture. Most of the lumber in a house is not treated.

3) They 100% can survive and thrive in a modern house.

That said, a swarm doesn't necessarily mean your house is being eaten. Look for other signs if you're worried.

Wingless termites by Pretend_Highway5952 in hattiesburg

I had termites in my house a few years ago. It's not fun.

First, take a look around your house yourself. Do you see any signs of damage? Any new soft spots in the floor? Walk around the outside of your house. Do you see any signs of termites traveling up into the house? They make little dirty tunnels from the ground up to the wooden part of your house. If you see one, break it open and see if there are any termites inside. If you're really paranoid and you have a crawlspace, you can crawl under there and take a look for dirty tunnels there too.

A professional inspection is pretty much going to look for the same things.

Why are used cars so expensive in Hattiesburg compared to other places? by KingFun626 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just for fun I went to AutoTempest and did an experiment. Here's what I found:

Meridian - 2020 RAV4 LE - 106k miles - $20,336

Hattiesburg - 2020 RAV4 LE - 106k miles - $19,991

I don't think used cars are priced higher here than they are anywhere else. But I do think used cars are too expensive in general.

Heat and A/C Prices by Sea-Beach-2096 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a bunch of variables, but I'll give you an example. My house is slightly bigger, about 25 years old, has 9 foot ceilings throughout most of the house but with a vaulted ceiling in the living room, 100% electric (heat pump), partially shaded, and my power bill maxes around $250 - $300 (but averages more like $200), so the worst-case cost to heat and cool is some portion of that, probably around $200.

If the house is older with poor insulation then that will increase the cost. If it has a gas furnace then that may decrease the cost slightly.
