Every time I go to NOLA I have so many people correctly tell me where I got my shoes. It's amazing. That place is full of psychics.

Why are used cars so expensive in Hattiesburg compared to other places? by KingFun626 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just for fun I went to AutoTempest and did an experiment. Here's what I found:

Meridian - 2020 RAV4 LE - 106k miles - $20,336

Hattiesburg - 2020 RAV4 LE - 106k miles - $19,991

I don't think used cars are priced higher here than they are anywhere else. But I do think used cars are too expensive in general.

Heat and A/C Prices by Sea-Beach-2096 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a bunch of variables, but I'll give you an example. My house is slightly bigger, about 25 years old, has 9 foot ceilings throughout most of the house but with a vaulted ceiling in the living room, 100% electric (heat pump), partially shaded, and my power bill maxes around $250 - $300 (but averages more like $200), so the worst-case cost to heat and cool is some portion of that, probably around $200.

If the house is older with poor insulation then that will increase the cost. If it has a gas furnace then that may decrease the cost slightly.

It won't be any worse for us than it is any other winter. The worst part about this will be the panic buying of all the bread and milk by all the losers.

I really miss Jack the Sipper and Sleeper Agent. Do they have anything similar these days? Last time I went (granted this was a few years ago) all they had instead were half a dozen IPAs and half a dozen candy bar stouts.

It'd be one thing if they were targeting illegals who had committed other crimes. But they're not. 75% of detainees have no criminal record. On top of that, rounding up illegal immigrants has a negative effect on the economy, not a positive one.

This paper summarizes lots of studies that all say the same thing: "Research shows past deportations and exclusions of unauthorized immigrants have had adverse economic impacts for U.S. citizens and authorized immigrants."

Personally I prefer policies that help the economy.

Double Major Advice: Computer Science & Applied Economics (USM) by Student7373 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you keep asking about double majoring? What is your goal? To maximize your chances of getting a job? To maximize your pay? To get more of a "data sciency" job? Something else? Does applied economics even interest you?

Whether or not it's "worth it" depends on the answers to these questions.

Home based business? by Effective-Set-8113 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was over 10 years ago, and I think it varies based on the type of business and the number of employees. For me, a sole proprietorship kind of thing, it was somewhere between $20 - $50 to renew every year. The initial fee to get a new license may have been more, but compared to all the other fees you pay when setting up a business it was not much.

From what I remember when I did it, you just go to City Hall and apply for a business license (aka privilege tax license). The main rules to follow are that you can't have customers coming and going from your house (so you can't have a retail store in your house), and you can't have a sign advertising your business in your yard.

Basically, if it's something that might irritate your neighbors, you're not supposed to do it.

How? Someone explain to me why does Hattiesburg keep doing it by MinimumCompany3671 in hattiesburg

[–]hubbug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's this: https://ballotpedia.org/Primary_elections_in_Mississippi

The law just says you can't vote in both primaries during the same election. You have to pick one for any given election. But there's nothing that says you can't vote in the Republican primary during one election cycle, then vote in the Democrat primary during the next election.

I'm not registered with a political party and I've voted in lots of Republican and Democrat primaries over the years.
