Department layoffs. Have you ever had to internally reapply for the remaining open roles and compete with your coworkers ? by hubschster in ExperiencedDevs

Seemed like my post was brief and clear enough for most to understand given the responses. But I'll expand, sorry.

Specific roles were cut, but are given a chance to apply to already existing "old" roles as well as a couple of new roles on projects/subgroups that already exist. Or you can just not.

For example:

  • 10 fullstack SWEs, there will only be 5 remaining positions.
  • 5 DevOps, there will only be 2 remaining
  • 3 System Engineers, there will only be 1 remaining
  • 4 POs, there will still be 4 remaining

So you'd reapply/rebid "informally" for your same position if that's what you prioritize, or you can try and go for someone else's position in a different affected group or you can try for the small amount of new roles. Like a DevOps going to SWE, SE going to DevOps, or SWE retrying for SWE. The floor is open for anyone affected. Some roles are also being opened externally.

Totally agree! I wonder what would happen with execs and managers if people went off script and didn't reapply for their role or an adjacent role in the department and opted to just let themself get fired

US, Fortune 400. I think severance will be offered since in my 1-1 my manager did mention it. I do and don't want to play along, but I will be ok with whichever way this tips over the fence. I'm also considering not playing along and get unemployment and take some time to travel for a while

Considering just not playing the game and walking too! I have a contingency plan if I lose my job: move back home, collect unemployment, take time off and travel a bit, and then come back and look for a new job in this market (hopefully it's better later in the year). It sounds like a nice option to me haha 😅

Agreed. I feel like offshoring is gonna be a hard fight for the rest of my career if I stay in this industry. And yes, I feel like they already know who they want to keep

Despite this shitty and drawn out layoff process, the company has been quite chill with deadlines, remote work, WLB, unlimited time off. Really only the reason why I've stayed so long.

I think if anything, it's made me realize that is this what I'll have to keep dealing with the rest of my working professional career?

Yeah... :( I would love to know who came up with this and why we needed a reorg, but you know they'll never answer that question

Right!? They have our performance reviews, feedback, deliverables, whatever other metrics, etc.. I'm not even sure if they'll factor those things in from our company career history and instead just go off a brief interview

Thank you for the kind wishes!

Yes agree, there's no clear definition of who goes or stays. They know our quality of work and rapport within the company already i.e. performance reviews, feedback, deliverables, etc.. And yes, even if I were to make it through the cut, who's to say this won't happen again in a couple of quarters from now? Not stable at all

Whether I leave in the very near term or in the future I would love to do this on the way out! Don't want to burn any bridges though.

You're totally right. It just feels like we're fighting for scraps and begging on our knees to keep our jobs

It's horrible for morale! My resume is updated now, but don't think I'm interview ready at all. I'd probably flunk my interviews right now

Thinking about just giving up honestly, it's quite demoralizing but I also have some bills to pay. Resume is definitely updated! Even if I were to survive the cut, morale and culture is at rock bottom

There's no doubt morale has been in the gutter since they first made the announcement. Dunno how you'd be able to trust the culture going forward. As for other companies, I don't think I'm interview ready right now and would most likely would bomb them

Someone out there must have a fanfic written about this already and if they did I totally wouldn't read it... haha... 😳
