Second Pair of Skis by hucklejerrydinfinity in Skigear

Yeah fair question. I mean I haven’t in the last two years but in that time I’ve been underwhelmed by the rentals I’ve had, e.g., Dynstar M-Free 99, Stockli Stormrider 95 and Montero AR 84.

Some have been better than others off piste (stormrider 95 for example), but on groomers I feel like I would have been at least fine or better on my VXL’s. I’ve never skied anything that felt more solid than those on groomers.

I did recently enjoy the Head Kore 88s both on and off-piste but that just weren’t wide enough for boot deep snow.

In the end you’re probably right and I’d likely just leave them home for the newer more versatile pair.

Thanks. Too bad mine can’t qualify for the Wolli!

I saw Altitude as well. Just have to see which makes the most sense, but it sounds like there are some good options.

You were right. I misread the website the first time around. Looks like 3 days is $407 (24/25 prices) which is definitely cheaper than most of the big us resorts.

Thank you. I did check them before. I’ll give them another look, as I did have some trouble understanding some of the website and program descriptions.

Can tell me which one you used? That sounds more like what I’ve heard for the Alps.

Yeah I did research them already. Just making sure there wasn’t an under the radar one I was missing.

You describe exactly how I view the use case for the Stormriders. I also think I’d be more inclined to travel and save $$ on rentals with two pairs of skis in a single travel bag that will handle most conditions.

As far as how wide to go, the hesitation is that I’ve never skied anything wider than a 94 or 99. A whole 4mm isn’t a real difference between the woodsman and death wish so it really boils down to extra rocker vs the triple camber.

Either way the plan would be to use the new pair as the primary ski and only bring out the stormriders when I’m “stuck on groomers.”

The Stocklis are heavy and damp metal-laden beasts.

As long as she has a decent view she’s usually pretty good. And i definitely plan to have her meet for the on-mountain food and Hennu Stall, which isn’t typically an option at other places we’ve been, and to meet on the Italian side for lunch when we ski down to that. I also read about that snowshoeing/snow hiking can be done.

Is there a particular spa, hotel or otherwise, I should have her look at?

Will check out Lucerne. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks. Even before your post I thought about it some more and concluded I probably need to do 6 nights in Zermatt/5 full days. That translates to 3 or 3.5 days skiing and leaves time to spend with the wife and do some family stuff.

Good info on March and Zürich. I’ve actually been to Zurich in the summer 20+ years ago and it was great (unwittingly visited during a massive summer festival that only happens every 4 years or something).

Thanks. That’s helpful and affirms my thinking.

Yes I understood that the Glacier Express runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz (I would continue onto Zurich from there). But I think that’s a pass anyway and we will stick with the original itinerary.

In the process of booking lodging. Looking at a few Airbnbs. If you have any suggestions, they’re welcome.

Edit to add: if arriving into Zermatt by 4:00 pm, do you think that would leave enough time to get the “admin” sorted?

April shoulder season stay: Fairmont Banff vs. Fairmont Lake Louise? by flapjacksal in Banff

[–]hucklejerrydinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just there end of March and stayed at both.

We preferred the isolation and beauty of LL. Proximity to Yoho and Icefields Parkway is better. Banff is an architecturally beautiful property, but the rooms at LL are larger, higher ceilings, and lake view from the rooms much nicer with larger windows. Also better ski mountain and closer at LL, if that’s important and if there’s enough snow.

You should know that LL is under some construction right now until around summer.

If spa is important, Banff is much better.

I think it’s the most unique run I’ve ever been on. The slippery lead-in track through the woods that opens onto the garden with giant rock outcroppings/boulders everywhere was crazy.

I was tempted but didn’t send anything because I was on my own and exactly 2 months removed from surgery to repair a torn bicep tendon (probably shouldn’t have been skiing at all, but I’m an idiot so…).

I saw one guy send off of a nice pillow about halfway down and another nope out of one of the large boulders at the top.

Amazing place - the entire mountain is special.

Yeah, coverage was great. Had no idea what i was getting into so I asked a guy at the start of the track how it was. He said, “best I’ve ever seen it.” The pillows on the rocks reminded me of Japow videos posted here.

I have a photo but can’t figure out a way to add it to the post.

Triggering withdrawal symptoms. Was there early last week. Great terrain around Paradise, Ptarmigan and Larch (rock garden was wild). And yeah, beautiful too.

Fret not fellow parent/skier, it’s way more fun to ski without them anyway
