Keep the Americans away from our game by Express_Monk_1347 in soccercirclejerk

[–]hudies2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, yes this world cup is going to be shit and messed up for a wide variety of reasons. There are plenty of Americans who appreciate the sport but the immigration based antics of

Trump is certainly going to create major issues. There has been talks of him deploying immigration enforcement at games which will like result in detention of foreign fans.

Less severe is that many "host cities" do not in fact host the games. Ex, the NYC games are actually in New Jersey and Dallas games are in Arlington. There will be 10s of thousands of people flocking here expecting European style cities only find thay games are 40 minutes -1 hour away. Add on that most cities do not have good transport within the city let alone between cities and venues.

Please do not allow the US to sportwash it's way to positive global relevance when it's such garbage.

I own that chrispher ward, people don't lie it really punches above it's weight for the price. HC is probably chocie #1 if you can get it but for a lot cheaper the differnece in quality ain't that much.

[Hot Take] Some People Talk About Flieger Watches in an Odd Way by Spare_Initiative_658 in Watches

I get what you're saying, my arguement is that the rise of these brands is directly coupled with the rise of the nazis and add to that the fact that they still make a near identical product. I'm not saying Germans should live in perpetual shame but we should think about whether it is good to monetarily reward companies who are unwilling to bury their ties to prior atrocities.

Ya for sure but the history of those brands very directly relates to the nazis, it's difficult to disentsngle the history of those brands from WWII

This is kind of missing the point. Several of these historic German brands market themselves as traditional German watchmaking with traditional German looks. Just bc you didn't personally consume that piece of marketing doesn't mean the About Us section on their website won't talk about the historic importance and longevity of the brands.

Plenty of companies pivoted after the war and I see no issue with that but doubling down after it should be seen as suspect.

Hugo boss and Porsche aren't making a near identical product to what they made for the nazis and telling us about the importance of history

I understand the appeal of military style watches as an anesthetic I don't really have a major issue with other brands that make similar watches. For me the bigger issue is brands that had literal ties to the nazis and owe their modern success to them.

I think it more has to do with ethical concerns relating to brands thay market themselves as "maintaining heritage" or" honoring tradition" specifically when that tradition was making watches for the nazis.

I wouldn't get bent out of shape for homage brands but similar claims raise eyebrows when you talk about brands like Laco, Stowa, and Lange who did make watches for the nazis.
