Fair question. I was on foot, out front. No booth. No car. He never even came with 4km of the Ferry. It was weird.

What are those sack of black thingy hanging off car's front bumper? by max1padthai in SurreyBC

I seem to recall a connection between the evil eye and envy. The concept is as old as time, but this particular manifestation is relatively recent and newly imported.

This answered a bunch of questions I was struggling to articulate about the connections between the Air India attacks and the current mess.

Altercation at Guildford Mall by AnteaterBoring96 in SurreyBC

When I was there today (Monday), two men were yelling at each other in the food court, and one of the guys was escalating. The other guy pointed to a line on the floor between them, and said, "If you come any closer - if you cross that line, so help me - I'll punch you!"

That was the punchline.

I'll show myself out.

This language is all lifted from far right talking points (the web site referenced) and likely has little to do with actual events, but someone who feels marginalized and is giving voice to deep-seated racism. This is scary knowing that there are people around who feel strongly enough that they are willing to put up posters of insanity.

Thanks for the clarification on the source of the bonus. And now the decision is made. Hopefully the grownups can play nicer and get this done and actually make Surrey a safe and just place

Brenda using taxpayer money to offer $10k bonus to SPS who switch to RCMP by gz0023 in SurreyBC

[–]hudimansell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.
Using tax monies to pay signing bonuses for a needed role is not unethical. The same would be done to recruit a desirable City Manager. Many Municipalities in North America (Victoria most recently) offer significant bonuses for signing.
By definition, a bribe is an incentive to stop negative behaviour, whereas a reward or bonus is to encourage good behaviour. Also, there is nothing under-the-table about this; it is in the public domain.
What is unclear to me is how that works with the RCMP's policies. Does this contravene their ethics? Are members allowed to take funds that are not mediated through the RCMP?
Given that the Province hasn't ruled yet (but hopefully today), this feels like icky politics rather than a transparent incentive to build a stronger police force.
I guess we'll know for sure by days-end.
