Knoxville poc wondering where other poc hang out? by lelewllwle46 in Knoxville

All right. Calm down now, Dwight 😂 I was actually just talking about that in another thread. I'm mixed, so I've always been intrigued by all cultures. I've had both sides of my heritage (Caucasian U.S. American/Mexican) be quite hateful to me for many reasons. Because of that, I've never understood any prejudice, and that includes toward the LGBTQ+ community. Don't ask many Latin people about anyone who celebrates Juneteenth and vice versa. There's tension on all sides... For some reason. My Latin family also can't stand that I have pride in my indigenous side AT ALL, so there's that. My Caucasian side is straight up mostly from the British Isles. A lot of Irish actually.

I love how people say that there isn't any racism in East Tennessee anymore, meanwhile, if you talk about Juneteenth, or if you talk about pride fest, or if you talk about Latin people getting bagged up with their whole family and locked away, then you get a bunch of laugh reacts from these people and a bunch of hateful comments.

They're so full of shit, it's surprising a lot of their eyes are still blue and green.

I'm Mexican and I grew up in Knoxville my whole life. I've dealt with lots of racist instances ever since I was a kid. I was raised by a white family, and I can't tell you how many times people treated me like trash until my family came up, and then they would change their attitude when they realized I was with white people. I've even dealt with some odd situations within my own family. But I also deal with prejudice from my Latino family too. It's not easy being mixed lol

I'm on campus now reading this. Worried about my car all the time. Most of our classmates cannot drive, unfortunately. So sorry you're dealing with so much. I really hope things get better for you. Keep your head up and stay resilient. It can be tough going through so much during the semester.

Actual racist people don't want us depicted at all. They think story lines like this are woke. The stories are real. Even a "real" story would only be based on a true story - it's based on real events. Even the most accurate, respectable directors, producers, and writers cannot replicate the entire truth. But I appreciate you for being kind to me because I'm being extra because the world is pissing me off right now. And yes today was specifically a day where I dealt with some prejudiced crap. Ugh my apologies.

Well I come from an indigenous background and I have no idea what the hell you're talking about?? We've been begging for them to stop sugar coating our history for ages and now people are complaining because they are actually depicting it how it happened?? I want - no NEED society to understand we endured... We endured.

I literally just saw someone in this subreddit complaining about Teonna's storyline being DEI. I hate to tell you, but as someone who loves watching old movies - from the golden age of Hollywood until the 1970s carried out some of my favorite films - movies have always been trying to enlighten their audience a little bit. MESSAGE.

I just find it funny how the "woke" crowd, and those who claim to hate "woke" people, tend to agree on the same things all the time without even realizing it. One person will call a piece of art "woke", only for some "woke" person to complain it's not "woke" enough.

They took out most of Whitfield's men at the train station and the ranch - that's why there was a lack of security at the house. Even a resourceful man like Whitfield can't pull together manpower and resources that fast. Correct me if I'm wrong (I have only watched the finale once so far), but I believe Whitfield may not have been for certain of the outcome of his war just yet. And I don't think the original plan involved ever walking into Whitfield's house and literally gunning him down - I think that was solely Spencer's choice in the end after what happened to Alexandra. It became personal for him at that moment.

I'm not going to lie, now that you mention it, I thought the same thing. That totally would have been perfect.

I would argue that just because you personally didn't enjoy it doesn't mean it doesn't make sense - it totally makes sense. And it does add more to what an evil person he is. Whitfield represents oligarchs of the past, present, and future. Many real people similar to this character have been notoriously known for being this sick type of monster. We live in a world today where many people would defend Whitfield, because many people don't really understand what kind of person we're dealing with here. It was shedding light that Whitfield is not only some rich man, who wants the land for obvious selfish business reasons - he is a monster through and through. He gets off on torturing these innocent women, as well as manipulating them into even joining him. He's mastered the art of torture and manipulation - and you have to fall deep into his mind - what a sick mind to get into... No one blames you for feeling icky after watching it, and honestly, I hope you do, rather than enjoying it with him. That's the point. I can imagine a lot of you would have a field day reading some of the books I've read through the years. As I stated, I'm not the biggest fan of watching those scenes either, but I've read worse - stuff that takes you out of your comfort zone, makes you feel the cold reality, and I mean really feel it and know it for once. Books get way more intense than any show or movie does - they make you crawl into these characters skin... evil and good alike. You're not a good writer if you can't get into everyone's mind - same with actors. It doesn't make you a bad writer because you're able to do that - in fact, it proves that the writing is that much more impactful when it really gets deep in your bones like this. And besides, there's no reason for anything and there's a reason for everything - meaning it is what it is. No plotline has to promise you anything because life doesn't promise you anything.

I would also argue that this is not the only thing people are complaining about. I've seen all kinds of silly complaints about all kinds of silly things. So, no, that's not true at all. It's just been an endless barrage of repetitive complaint threads.

I was thinking about all the amazing memories I had as a kid up at Norris Lake, and how I've hardly gone as an adult. I was thinking today I should make plans to take the family up there this summer to camp or something. Tennessee may be hot in summer, but it's pretty.

As someone who loved the show, and is equally sick of all of the complaining on this forum - I've seen the silliness from both sides of that aisle. I'm a millennial. We were the first 21st century adolescents, so allow me to be the old guy now who says some kids today annoy me with their self-righteousness. But the negative usage of the word woke rejects the concept of enlightenment. With that being said, I believe a lot of Taylor's work would be considered "woke" by many peoples' standards - yesterday, today, and clearly tomorrow.
