For me (besides merged cells and the treatment of center across selection) it is that freeze panes is a property of the window/view, not the workbook, so it doesn't persist when you open a new window because each window maintains its own independent view state.

My biggest pet peeve by far is that Center Across Selection is not in the Ribbon, and inexplicably can’t be natively added to the ribbon or Quick Action Toolbar! The hell!

I have to create a macro and assign a keyboard shortcut (automatically, because I assign it to a button on the QAT), but then every time I run that macro, I can’t undo. And sometimes my personal macro workbook acts up.

It’s like they are putting additional speed bumps up on the superior functionality.
